0007 Pretty But Inconvenient

Evie Hunter stood in front of the huge glass window, staring at the hustle and bustle of the city down below. She had been more than amazed the first time she stood on the same spot and saw the scenery. Then and there, it really came to her how entirely different this world was to hers.

However, her opinion about Evely’s world did not change. In fact, with everything that she had been seeing so far, it only confirmed her thoughts. This world looked aesthetically modern and grand, but in reality, everything in it was so backwards. Even if her world could be called medieval in appearance, as she had searched the word, her world was more than ten times more convenient than where she was right now.

For example, this world’s mode of transportation. Sure, the metal carriages she had seen came in different forms and colors, and they looked so nice. Evie was even crazy delighted upon seeing them for real. But aside from appearance, there was nothing else about them to be desired. They were too slow. Even the metal birds she had seen flying outside the window who the nurse said were delivering emergency patients to the hospital were too slow.

What were those called again? Ah, helicopters. She heard there was another bigger type of metal bird called an airplane, but for sure it’s slow too.

Evie sighed. She suddenly missed having chanleya driven carriages. Chanleyas were tigers with wings. They ran fast on land and flew fast too. Also, they had griffins and dragons for transportation as well— and unicorns.

They were not as fancy as the metal carriages, but they were sure as hell a lot faster. Besides, in this world, one could not drive and fly using the same vehicle. The person had to drive a carriage for land or the metal bird for flying. Also, she heard that when people fly in this world, they can not feel the wind against them. Evie thought that it was a pity. Back in her world, she and Andrew would always—

Evie’s thoughts came to a screeching halt at the mention of that person, and she forcefully kept the memories of her world at bay by shaking her head. But, she had forgotten how she was still injured, and the movement made her dizzy.

“Damn it!” she cursed at the discomfort only to realize she cussed again and slapped her own mouth.

She had no idea why, it was certainly Evie in Evely’s body, but she still cursed like a fishwife like Evely did.

Was that muscle memory? She wondered about it because that was certainly Evely’s bad habit and not hers, before groaning when her head started aching. Her head was still wrapped in bandages as the doctor said she had a hairline fracture on her skull. She did not really understand what that was, but it sure was giving her a terrible headache.

“What happened?”

A panicked voice asked and Evie found herself being led back towards the bed. When she looked up, Liz Hunt’s worried expression welcomed her, but she did not stay. Liz quickly went to the side of the room to press the intercom to call for doctors.

Evie loved that gadget too. Like the magical button on the gate, it could summon people to her room. But she felt too sick to appreciate it at the moment.

“Quick, Evely! Lie back down. The doctor and nurses will come soon,” Liz told her as she gently helped her to lie down on her back.

Soon, a doctor came in followed by two nurses.

“Ah, Ms. Hunt, did you get up again?” the nurse asked as soon as she saw Evely’s pale face.

“What’s wrong with her?” Liz asked the doctor who checked on Evie.

“She’s probably having a headache. She should not be moving too much. Her head injury is not a joke,” he answered as he scribbled down on Evie’s chart and commanded a nurse to get something for her pain.

Hearing the doctor’s command, Evie let out a heavy sigh. She had totally forgotten that aside from transportation, the medical skills of the healers in that world were lacking. She had been hospitalized for five days, and yet, her head was still injured. Her divine inheritance had not returned, and so she was healing at the same pace as a normal human, which was frustrating.

“Mrs. Hunt, I was not kidding when I said she needs at least three to four weeks of rest before she starts feeling better with the type of injury she has, and another three to four months before she fully recovers. If she does not have ample rest, she will suffer sequelae. You won’t want her to suffer forever from migraines, will you?,” the doctor told Liz, and Evie let out another sigh.

She knew that word. It was the after effect of the kidnapping that Evely suffered in the past life. She was dependent on pills for migraine until the time she passed away.

The doctor gave more instructions to Liz as Evie popped the medicine the nurse gave her. Her stepmother looked as if she took everything the doctor told her seriously and even asked some questions of her own about what Evie could and couldn’t eat.

If it were the real Evely, she would have scoffed and dissed her stepmother for trying to show off. She would have embarrassed her too for trying to butter her up, and she would have gladly told her that it was not working. All her life, Evely had thought that this woman was her enemy.

But she was not. Evie knew it best.

When the doctor left, Liz turned to her, and when their eyes met, the older woman suddenly froze and looked apologetic. She also tried to slouch as if she wanted to minimize herself in front of Evie who remained lying on the bed.

“I-I’m sorry. It’s just that your dad is at the police station at the moment so he asked me to come here first to see if you need anything.”
