The curse of lust

I awoke to the face of a bearded man wearing heavy lipstick. He looked down at me with a duck like smile his brows fully raised.

I reacted how anyone would in that scenario.

"Ahhhhhhhhh!"

I screamed

"We'll good morning to you too." Said the bearded man.

I scooted back and pressed my back against the head board of the bed.The way he looked was so….. Backwards. I couldn't take it.

After having moved farther away from him I decided to get a better view of him. He wore a red sundress which heavily showed off his hairy chest and pecs.

"Why are you wearing a dress!" I screamed

He grinned.

"My appearance confuses my enemy's causing them to hesitate." He brought his hand into the air and closed it into a fist.

"I leap in using that moment's hesitation. And crush them. And then there's nothing left but little quivering fragments." He gave me what I'm sure he thought was a comforting smile as he extended his hand

With a tentative hand I reached to shake his.

"Nice to meet ya. My names rob. And I'm the mayor of this town."

And so my first day in robs town began.

Rob told me bluntly that I was now in debt for my treatment. And that I had to leave now unless I wanted to be further in debt.

Being randomly put into debt seemed to be a pattern these days.

So I walked out of the tent that they have housed me in and began to roam the town.

I needed a way to make money. As I roamed the sparsely populated streets I saw a sign. Attached to the wall of a quaint wooden building.

"Librarians for hire."

I had been wanting to look into information about the world. This was a perfect opportunity to do so.

Sitting on a chair right at the entrance of the library was a small twisted woman. Her spine seemed to have been bent at an odd angle and she had a perpetual scowl on her face.

"Umm. I'm here for the librarian job." I said timidly

The woman grinned

"Sure. Your hired."

"What! Shouldn't there be an interview or something?!?!" I yelled

She shook her head.

"No. If you want to work as a librarian that means you want to read books. How could one not trust a fellow reader?"

I smiled.

~Well that's pleasant.~

"Okay. What are my duties?"

"I just want you to dust the books. And make sure no one brings food in."

"Okay." I said whilst giving her a hearty nod. Things had been going surprisingly easy. "Is it okay for me to read when I'm not doing those things." I asked her

She smiled "yup that's fine."

So I grabbed a few books and began to read.

Why the fuck am I surprised?! Turns out that these people are stupid. They haven't even invented crop insurance! (Farmer pays insurance and gets reimbursed if there's a bad harvest.)

"Stupid. Fucking stupid. I could make a better society with just a month of effort."

The librarian woman glanced at me from a distance.

I paid her no mind.

So! Quick run down of this world.

It is completely forest. By completely I mean completely. Despite being so forest heavy rivers and ponds and the like are exceptionally rare. In fact some theorized that there are only four natural bodies of water in the whole continent.

How do all these trees get there water then? Simple. Under he ground there are massive rivers the average width of the river is one km across and they go on for thousands of miles at a time.

These rivers are said to flow roughly at a horses sprinting speed. So fast that if you were caught up into one you would be bound to die.

The rivers are commonly called leylines. This also explains why the water from that well was fast enough to knock me unconscious. It was build into a leyline.

But that's just the geography. What's next? Next would be the government. It can be easily summed up in one word. SHIT!

There is no cetralized government on this continent. Because everyone is to busy fighting over the areas with the most leylines. As leylines are optimal for farming. And birth control hasn't been invented yet so the constant need to acquire more farmland creates war after war after war.

Most of the societies of this continent have been trapped in a constant flux. Their population rises massively. Famine and poverty set in. They go to war for new farmland. That war either leaves them with nothing but a pile of bodies which takes down the population enough allowing removing the food issue. Or they win and stave of starvation long enough until there population grows enough to warrant another war. But it's only a matter of time till they lose. I tracked back through the records. And every plot of land has been owned by a minnmum of two different nations.

It was a disgusting world dictated by only sickness and death.

But I had read a geology book. They had all the compounds they needed to create condoms and other birth control devices. The leaders has just been to stupid to stimulate the necessary technological growth to cause their creation.

Hmm. If one were religious they could say this was a land cursed by the sin of lust.

"IT'S SO FUCKING STUPID!" I scream

"Shhhhhh!"

And then I was pierced by lilliths penetrating shush.

That's right. The librarians name was Lilith. I knew that because her name was written on most of the informative books here. She seemed to be somewhat of a world leader in the sciences.

It goes to show you how horribly run the kingdom was if one of your best scientists is a random librarian in bumfuck nowhere.

Honestly I was amazed by their stupidity.
