Raising a Hero

She had only wanted to have a working marriage and a happy family. All of her efforts had been towards that goal. Despite that, her husband leaves her for another woman after the loss of her unborn child, and just as she starts to pick herself up, she dies in a car accident. But this isn't the end of her story. Her spirit is picked up by her brother. He happens to be a beginner god who needs help raising the hero who is supposed to save his fledgling world. Thinking he is offering her a long-sought-after opportunity to be a mother, she readily agrees, and he sends her down to his world with the gift of healing and a Methuselah grade body to aid her on her quest. She quickly finds her little boy and is overjoyed to have someone to love and baby at last. But this hero doesn't want her as his mother. He wants her as something else. Suggested for ages 14+. Chapter 227

I looked around again for someone, anyone, else. Every muscle and joint in my body locked up and my skin went cold.

"How did you get here?" I asked.

"Did you really think you could get that far away on foot?" he stepped towards me. "There's no need for you to worry, now. I'm here. You've done good finding somewhere to bunker down during the eruption. I told you that dragon wasn't safe. Can't tell you how surprised I am it didn't eat you."

I wished he would stop talking. Even though he continued to be soft spoken there was something painful about the sound. I even lifted up hands to my ears.

He paused just out of arms reach from me, again beneath the shade of a cleared branch. The specks of sunshine that made it through the leaves didn't reach his eyes. I could have sworn they had been a light gray-blue, but even in the daylight they looked as dark as a cave. His cracked lips twitched.

"Are you trying to block me out? That's a little mean."

"Go away," I said reflexively.
