I looked around again for someone, anyone, else. Every muscle and joint in my body locked up and my skin went cold.

"How did you get here?" I asked.

"Did you really think you could get that far away on foot?" he stepped towards me. "There's no need for you to worry, now. I'm here. You've done good finding somewhere to bunker down during the eruption. I told you that dragon wasn't safe. Can't tell you how surprised I am it didn't eat you."

I wished he would stop talking. Even though he continued to be soft spoken there was something painful about the sound. I even lifted up hands to my ears.

He paused just out of arms reach from me, again beneath the shade of a cleared branch. The specks of sunshine that made it through the leaves didn't reach his eyes. I could have sworn they had been a light gray-blue, but even in the daylight they looked as dark as a cave. His cracked lips twitched.

"Are you trying to block me out? That's a little mean."
