Chapter 120

Time passed. Nights with the flavor of winter stopped happening. Green sprouts rose from my patch of dirt and Hal and Milly's chicken's hatched some chicks, which I could NOT get enough of. Gus allowed himself to be coerced into coming to see them. He said I was the weird one for getting so caught up in the running little fuzzballs, but I caught him with that goopy cute smile on more than one occasion. Not even the great teenage grump could defeat the power of baby chicks!

I had ulterior motives for pushing him into a nest of cute babies.

And since I had no delicate touch when it came to matters in general, I just decided to jump into the polar waters head first.

"Who do you like better, Derrick or Roman?"

Gus froze mid-stroke of a tiny yellow chick in hand. The tiniest of goop smiles went into a frown as severe as the mood was cold.

"Are you trying to hook me up with a father figure or a mentor?" he asked.

"Um, a little of both?"
