He burrowed his head further into Luke’s shoulder, and wished he could just hide forever.

Jason ran him home at quarter to nine. Shane had begged off tea, mumbling about Sophie’s popcorn and the chocolate Rebecca had brought as a guest-gift, and Jason had bought it because Jason, really, wouldn’t know the first thing about stress-related appetite loss. Or stress in general.

“Chin up, brat,” Jason said quietly as he took the turning into the cul-de-sac. “It’ll get better, okay?”

Shane shrugged.

“It’ll be fine,” Jason insisted.

“Yeah, Jase. Thanks for today. I needed it.”

Jason hummed, and the frown on his face didn’t look quite right, with the way it pinched his eyebrows but left his eyes open and…anxious, almost. But Shane couldn’t remember seeing Jason anxious since they’d been small and anxiety had been about Dad being ten minutes late to pick them up from school, so he found himself floundering and unable to tell.
