Chapter 39

Something buzzed.

“S’my phone,” Jason said quietly, trying to step back. Shane clung, burying his face back into the leather, not wanting Jason to see the state of him. “C’mon, brat, I gotta answer that. It’ll be Dad.”

“I can’t go home yet,” Shane croaked.

“Shane…”

“I can’t face Dad. Not yet.”

Jason sighed heavily. “He’s not going to kick you out, Shane.”

“I can’t.”

Jason went quiet for a moment, hands on Shane’s shoulders and twitching, like he wanted to pull Shane away but wasn’t sure it would be a good idea. The phone was still buzzing insistently. “Okay, how about this?” he bargained. “You have to go somewhere. You can’t stay out here, and if you want to avoid Dad tonight then you’re best not coming to my flat, he’ll only follow you there. Pretty sure the Devereux lot would put you up for the night. Would that be okay? Stay the night there and then come home for lunch and talk it out then?”
