“You don’t know that. And you’ve not lost me, or the girls. I told you. We have a spare room. Anna will let you stay here, especially tonight. Come on. Come over.”

“I can’t. Dad…”

“Shane!” Luke interrupted, and Shane swallowed, shutting his teeth with a click. “Listen. Go to Bex’s. Now. Get yourself there. And if your dad isn’t here in the next hour, I’ll wheedle Anna into bringing me over there and we’ll either have a big sleepover at Bex’s house or you’ll come back here. Okay? And we’re going to go to sleep together, right, so I can hug you proper like I really want to right now, and then in the morning, we’re going to sort this out, okay? I promise.”

“…He hates me, Luke.”

The whisper was deadened by the trees, which seemed to listen and sympathise, the wind hissing through the leaves like the sucked-in breath between clenched teeth of a shocked grandmother.
