Chapter 28

“So you’re the only gay in the Kershaws?”

“…Dunno, Nessa’s twins are kind of queer…”

Luke sniggered again, then untangled himself to plant both hands on Shane’s face and kiss him soundly. Firmly. Like an order was being given.

“Uh…thanks?”

“Shut up,” Luke said, rolling his eyes. “Listen. Whatever happens, you have me. Okay? You will never have nowhere to go.”

The smile that Shane plastered onto his face felt shivery and false, and Luke’s stern expression softened.

“Whatever happens,” he repeated, “it’ll be fine eventually. Because eventually we will apply to the same universities, and we will get accepted, and we will go off into the sunset for our happy ending. You and me. Right?”

“You read way too many romance novels.”

“Films,” Luke corrected, and Shane rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, then you cry on me.”

“You love them really,” Luke replied loftily.

“No, no I don’t,” Shane replied equally loftily.
