“Spill, bitch.”

“I want to go to university,” Shane admitted, and went cherry-red when Jason gawked. “That’s why I need to stay for school.”

“You want to go to uni?” Jason echoed.

“Jase. Door.”

“Yeah, but you wanna go to uni?” Jason repeated, finally unlocking the door. Shane dumped his bag and shoes by the incredibly threadbare sofa and shrugged out of his damp jacket.

“Yeah. I want to…”

“What do you want to be a student for?” Jason asked, still in that I-can’t-believe-I’m-hearing-thisvoice. “They’re all massive tossers.”

“I want to study medicine,” Shane said insistently, ignoring the jibe. “I’m going to be a doctor.”

“What, field medic like?”

“No. Here. Neurology. How the brain works,” he added when Jason gave him a blank look.

“Right,” Jason said slowly. “And you need to stay here for the last bit of school?”

“Yeah.”
