Chapter 12

Maybe if Shane told him about the medical school thing when he was in this good mood, maybe…

They took dinner into the living room to watch the match. Dad was a Man City fan, having grown up in the inner-city slum. Jason was a Man United supporter, mostly to tick Dad off. Shane frankly thought the whole game was boring and infinitely preferred rugby, but he didn’t mind too much. And if Dad was paying half of his attention to the game, then only half of his attention would be on Shane. And if Dad’s team won…

“They better not have that bloody nancy Brazilian in defence again,” Dad grumbled as they sat down, and Shane flinched.

“I, um,” he tried. “I’m sorry about yesterday, but I really don’t want to go. I have school and stuff.”

“There’s schools in Cornwall,” Dad grunted. “Anyway, you’re a bright kid. Army’ll take you on as an officer on your results. Especially that maths one.”

“Chemistry,” Shane corrected faintly. His best result by far; his ticket to medicine.
