Chapter 10

“Here’s the basics,” Sophie continued obliviously, pushing her long dark hair back into an untidy ponytail and retrieving a notebook along with her lunch. “You need either to be earning money, or have some free room and board to finish school here, right? And then off to university and independence, yeah?”

“Yeah,” Shane said, when the pause dragged on too long.

“Yeah,” Sophie said decidedly. “So here’s the thing. You said your brother’s out because he’ll be signing up soon. What about your grandmother? Doesn’t she live over in Leicester?”

“Yeah, an hour and a half away by bus,” Shane said. “Anyway, she can’t afford me. Jason asked to live with her when he moved out. She can’t afford to keep one of us on her pension.”

“You could always ask your dad to…”

“And what reason would I be staying here for?” Shane asked pointedly.
