Chapter 44

'No, no, no, no, no! How could my luck be so good!? Or is this bad luck since I don't want it!?' Looking down at his hands, Jax looked at the harmless piece of paper laying within his palms. Moments ago, he felt the smooth surface of something fuzzy and upon pulling it out, saw to his horror that it was golden. 'Wait! The teachers only said we had to draw lots to see who would draw the golden ticket for a pass to the quarterfinals, they never said anything having to keep it!'

Looking around, Jax spotted the sleeping boy and rushed off in his direction. Reaching the boy who was sleeping on top of his Snorlax, Jax craned his neck all the way up the giant's big belly. "Yo! I have a proposition for you! What I have here in my hands is the golden ticket for a free pass to the quarterfinals! I want to trade it for your regular piece of paper!"

Looking down to see who woke him up, the navy-haired boy with sea, green eyes saw that it was the student who had caused such a big commotion yesterday. Because he was still sleeping, he didn't hear what the boy wanted from him. Also, because he was usually sleeping during class, no one really interacted with him, so Walter Jr. just assumed that the boy was checking out his cool Snorlax. Finding nothing wrong with a fellow classmate staring at his pokemon in amazement, Walter Jr. laid back down and went to sleep!

"Hey, hey, hey! Don't go back to sleep! I'm talking to you! Let's trade papers! Please!"

Waking back up, Walter Jr. slid down Snorlax's bouncy tummy and stretched to get rid of all the fatigue. Covering his mouth with one hand as he stretched and yawn, Walter Jr. looked over at the silver-haired boy before replying. "Mhm. Why should I?"

"Huh? I mean, um, because you're always sleeping?" Jax thought that because Walter Jr. was always sleeping in class that he was not motivated to actually become a talented trainer! Of course, how would Jax know anything about his hypersomnia when he was too busy chasing after a girl!

"What does sleeping have to do with, yawn, excuse me, wanting to battle? I don't want a freebie either…" The boy began rubbing his eyes again and swayed back and forth like he would fall down and go to sleep at any second now. With no control over his hypersomnia, Walter Jr. constantly fell asleep with no precursor! Ever since he was a little boy, Walter Jr. saw how cool his dad looked as he was battling other trainers and wanted to be just as cool! Hypersomnia or not, nothing was going to stop him from becoming a champion of a region!

"Tsk! How about I do any one favor for you in the fut-." Before Jax could continue, the teachers rushed the next battle to begin knowing full well that Jax was the one with the golden ticket! With no choice left, Jax could only accept his defeat as he made his way back to the bench with his favorite two beings plus an annoyed blue worm.

As the battles continued, these victors were the ones who qualified for the quarterfinals: obviously, Jax qualified, Ally beat one of the non-seeded students with a flawless victory, Olivia and her Elgyem destroyed the last non-seeded student, leaving Walter Jr. and Evelyn Freiders to duke it out with Evelyn coming out slightly on top!

"Let us give all four of these brilliant and talented students a hand of applause! Through their wits, ingenious play styles and well-trained pokemons, these four have fought their way to stand before us to fight for the one, the only, Battle Competition Champion title!"

"Ahhh! Whoaaa! Go get them!" The rest of the onlooking students clapped, cheered, whistled, and shouted to congratulate the four students who stood out amongst the rest up on the podium.

"The top six students out of those defeated have already received their Copper grade pokemon eggs leaving us with only the Iron, Gold, Platinum and…Diamond grade eggs left to be handed out! Any one of these four trainees could be bringing home their very own Diamond grade dragon today! Now, let the battles, BEGIN!"

With that start, the four students on the podium turned towards each other, each with their own battle spirits blazing. Through another draw earlier, their opponents had already been decided. First up, Jax was facing off against the bookworm, Olivia, while Ally was paired with her new archnemesis, Evelyn! Feeling the cold stare directed at her, Evelyn turned and faced Ally before smirking and skipping off the stage.

Up first was Jax's battle. Both students made their way towards their respective side of the field and summoned their own pokemon. Looking at the Elgyem, Jax fell into contemplation. Being a Psychic-type, Elgyem was a good matchup against Vioarr since psychic-type moves were super effective against poison-types.

In his previous life, Jax saw Beheeyem used competitively a couple of times. With its slow speed, paired with its powerful Analytic ability, Beheeyem was a force of nature that deserves its place as a powerful Psychic pokemon not falling behind Alakazam and Gardevoir. Thankfully, this wasn't a Beheeyem and only its pre-evolution, Elgyem but that didn't mean Jax was going to let his guard down. He already learned that lesson yesterday.

Once the signal to battle was issued from the referee, Jax immediately told Vioarr to distance himself and prep with the combo Protect and Endure. Olivia took this time to have Elgyem prepare her maxed-out Confusion. 'That's right! Elgyem doesn't learn any powerful special attack moves until its higher stages! Even the TMs available for it to learn aren't that difficult to deal with. Even so, I should still keep my guard up.'

Finish charging the Confusion, Elgyem fired the move towards Vioarr but it was slightly off completely missing him! Seeing the opening, Vioarr fired his own maxed-out Confusion. "Imprison!" With that call from Olivia, Vioarr's Confusion fizzled out and disappeared! 'Shoot! I completely forgot about that move! I just saw Elgyem fire a Confusion. With Imprison, moves that the opponent uses that the user also knows is useless!'

"Vioarr, back off! Confusion is useless in this battle! Let's stick with your other special attack move! Tactic Trapezoid 1!"
