Pewter City gym

I had checked in the Pokemon center with my Pokemon, it has become a habit of mine to come for regular checkups.

And there it was Pewter city gym.

Nobody was there to welcome anyone. The gate was already open for challengers to enter, and I proceeded as I was expected to.

It was not all so different from anime, I wonder how can I even remember the anime when I watched it in my previous life's childhood. That's like forty-something years.

"Who goes there!" Old Brock- that's how I would describe the hobo-looking man.

"I am here for a gym battle."

"No, no young man, I asked who goes there. You got a name?"

"Oh, Ethan Hunt from Pallet town."

"Pallet town huh... Well, come here, from what I heard from my predecessor, all of you Pallet town trainers were legit monsters." "Really?" I asked doubtfully, I mean Ash won just because of a lucky mistake.

"Yes, yes. There was this trainer who had a wartodle. That's not important, the important thing was he had been a trainer for just three days and defeated the gym leader here. I have to admit that should have broken some sort of record." he continued, " Then there was this girl with the Charmander and Bellsprout, and that bellsprout can give my Golem a run for his money. haha"

I forgot that my fellow trainers were not limited to Ash only, in the hindsight focusing on the protagonist, I had been short-sighted.

Actually, he is not even the protagonist anymore. This is not anime or manga, my world does not revolve around Ash, my world revolves around me.

Ash was never a competition, he was just an admirable character in some anime I watched while growing up, my reverence towards him had made me look at this world from a third-person perspective, of some characters but it is meant to be first-person.

I did not have a goal while participating in the rookie tournament or Indigo league. They were just an opportunity presented to me and I accepted them.

Those decisions of joining the league and tournament were made just because most people do it, or the real reason Ash chose to do it.

I would still participate in the league now, but now not because most people do it. Because I want to do it.

"You Ok kid?"

"Ah yes, I am good."

"So gym battle, you sure took your time coming here from Pallet"

"Oh I was here in the city, just training with my Pokemon, would not want to lose my first gym battle." Flint looked at me for a second then smiled. He waved at me as if asking me to follow him.

"Come here." we went inside the gym, a special arena, different from the one I was in earlier. "Here this is the exclusive gym leader arena. You see Pewter gym is one of the early gyms, it itself is called The Early gym, do you know why?"

"No"

"Because we have orders from the league itself to let most trainers win. This gym is meant to encourage the Pokemon trainer journey so we are literally giving away Badges from here.

Do you know the process to enter the league?"

"You have to get 8 gym badges?"

"You are severely lacking in the information department kiddo. There are three methods." He raised his three finders and continued.

"First is to get 6 B-rank and 2 A-rank gym badges, due to the fact that most trainers opt for this method, it had become a norm and other methods are not even known to most trainers as the eight Indigo gyms practice this method for most trainers unless asked otherwise.

So we gym leaders discussed among ourselves who to be the semi-permanent A-rank gym readers, and who to be the B-ranks.

Pewter City Gym, B-rank, the gym strictly uses Rock-type and Ground-type Pokémon.

Cerulean City Gym, B-rank, the gym strictly uses Water-type Pokémon.

Vermilion City Gym, B-rank, the gym strictly uses Electric-type Pokémon

Celadon City Gym, a B-rank gym leader is the popular model Erika. She gives out the Rainbow Badge and uses Grass-type Pokémon as her specialty.

Fuchsia City Gym, is a B-rank gym, one of the tough ones for newbies the gym strictly uses Poison-type Pokémon

Saffron City Gym, again a B-rank gym, the specialty being Psychic-type Pokémon.

Cinnabar Island Gym leader is old man Blaine. He gives out the Volcano Badge, and he uses Fire-type Pokémon.

And the last one, the Viridian City Gym leader is the business tycoon Giovanni, who uses Ground-type Pokémon, I don't think Saffron and Fuschia gyms battle as they should as B-rank gyms but still, they are told to hold back."

I was surprised as I was unknown that other methods were present to enter the Indigo league. Also now I understood why some gyms were shown as weak, where they were not so difficult to defeat, while some were almost like a brick wall. I mean if Ash had taken it upon himself to fight Viridian city gym leader first instead of Pewter, I doubt if any of his pokemon could even move before Giovanni's Pokemon.

True Ash had difficulties against brock but at least his pokemon could at least resist them.

But why was I being told this info?

"Should not you hide fellow gym leaders' info from trainers who challenge them? You just gave away all of their type specialties?"

"Oh, that is already an open secret. The thing is I am impressed by you picking up training as your first task instead of rushing to a nearby gym for your first badge, so I was humoring you with a challenge. You see the other way to enter the league is to win 4 A-rank gym battles. It's a win-win for some trainers as they get more time to train and less to roam around the whole of Kanto for individual gym badges. what say you, interested in the hard way?"

"I am intrigued, what are the battle conditions?"

"Nothing changes, the same 2v2 like other trainers

Just I hold back less than normal."
