Chapter Twenty

Madeline’s POV

To call this a “flashback” would be a crime.

But I’m not quite sure if “segments” is the right word either.

What exactly did I experience the second those tunes hit my ears?

All I recall is a spark of recognition. My brain whirrs, a tornado of memory caught up in its own winds violently cascading around me. Each moment leaving before I have enough time to savor or even process it.

I go through… cycles. Phases? No, flashes.

Is there a right word for this?

Sense.

A sound.

I hear the engine clash with the radio, each wave sending buzzing energy.

Andrew’s driving, I’m in the back seat. Cotton candy lingers on my mouth and I can hear the sound of pleasant screaming fading in the distance. I stretch out further, my mind blanks in exhaustion but my ears lay awake. I hear symphonies mingling with speeding signs. Headlights blinking to the beat. Each beep, honk, clash, rev reminds me of an instrument.

One note, another turn.
