Chapter Forty Four

Madeline's POV

I park my car and run up the steps to my apartment. I quickly unlock the door, set my belongings down, and check the stove. Everything is as I left it, so why does something feel different?

I slam open the door to my room and glare at the phone that lays face-down on a bookshelf. I set it down on my table and pull my personal journal closer to me. It has logs and logs of my scattered memories and additional new ones, but it’s still not enough. I need to know more. I need to know the truth.

It’s a four-number code. This should be easy enough. Except for the fact that there are over ten thousand combinations. But this isn’t just any password, it’s mine.

I peer down at the options and spot one that stands out from the crowd. Eight. Like the magic eight ball, of course! Simple enough. Alright, other numbers between one through nine… would I have duplicates? No. That’s not something I would do. They have to make sense. They need to have meaning.
