The world under the Scarlet Moon

75 years ago, people lived in peace under the pale light of a "Normal" moon. Cities prospered without walls, people traveled freely from place to place, life was happy. Everything changed one summer night when the moon betrayed all life that dared to call it beautiful.

That summer night, the moon rose for the first time bathed in its scarlet red glow. People were astonished, they of course had seen blood moons before, but this was different. This wasn't some stellar phenomenon caused by the sun, earth, and moon...no...the moon was really glowing a scarlet red.

That night, "Monsters" as they are referred to now started appearing globally. Vampires, Werewolves, so many different kinds, all started rampaging against the lives of humans that had lived so peacefully until now.

World Militaries were quick to respond, but against such a strange threat, in such a big number? There was nothing they could do to save everyone. In one night, cities fell, homes were destroyed...chaos ensued.

The moon never returned to normal after that day. Every night these monsters would appear and threaten the lives of more and more. Every night the militaries occupying the cities that still stood would fight off the attacks, but they were losing resources quickly. And so a plan was devised, to construct large walls around the remaining cities, the new "capitals" of the broken world.

Over the next 5 years, this plan was put into action, and it worked. The attacks slowly subsided when the monsters made no headway against the large walls that now surrounded humanity's haven.

Cherros is one of the havens that managed to keep some semblance of normal life thanks to the governments' actions. Research was done on new effective ways to exterminate these monsters. Sure, bullets and bombs killed them, but those were hard to come by in large quantities now sealed away from resources. This research spurred the creation of the world's best Monster Extermination group, the "Red Moon Seekers."

The Red Moon Seekers harnessed the same power that brought life to these monsters, the power of the Scarlet Moon. What they created couldn't be referred to as anything except magic, and it was quite effective. The monsters that did make their way into the city were quickly and effortlessly dispatched. For a time, peace has returned to human lives.

70 years later, nothing has changed. The Scarlet Moon still hangs in the sky, as if mocking humanity's efforts to dispatch its spawn. Nothing has changed, except for the monsters we're up against. They no longer resemble mindless beasts, they've grown smarter. It is rumored that a few even live amongst us now, lying in wait for their time to strike.
