Sleep… Sleep is seen by many as a highly pleasurable experience. Something to look forward after a tiring day. A reward for all that hard work. A substantial section of time dedicated to complete relaxation, providing valuable time away from the world or with a loving partner. In our always on the go society, it is little wonder why this moment of detachment is held with such high regard.

But that's what makes 'waking up' one of the worst and everlasting punishments in history…

"Ahhh…" Opening his eyes, Shido found a red-haired little girl with twin-tails dancing to samba all over his body, exclusively the chest and stomach.

Not even trying to push her away, he just raised his arms to rub his sleepy eyes. "Ahh, Kotori. My cute little sister…"

"Ohhhh?!" The little sister noticed that Shido was awake, so she stopped dancing and adjusted her middle school uniform. Then she happily smiled and asked. "What is it? My cute big brother?"

"Well, get off me. It's heavy."

Kotori gave an exaggerated nod and leapt from the bed, but the push she gave to Shido's stomach felt like a punch in the kidney.

"Gfhu!"

"Hahaha, Gfhu! Hahahaha!" Kotori laughed at the grunt that Shido let out, while the big brother pulled his blanket over his head once again.

"Ahh! Hey! Why are you sleeping again?" Kotori raised her voice while shaking Shido's body.

"Just another ten minutes…"

"No way! Wake up already!"

At that moment, Shido had an epiphany. He sat up from his bed in a dizzy manner and slowly said. "R… Run away…"

"Eh?" Kotori was surprised by Shido's change of behaviour, while he continued speaking. "...Actually, I've been infected with the 'if-I-don't-sleep-for-another-10-minutes-I'll-tickle-my-sister-to-death virus', a.k.a. the T-virus…"

"Wh-What?!" Kotori stepped back from Shido's bed, surprised.

"Run away…. While I still can control myself…"

"B-But, what will you do!?"

"Don't worry about me… as long as you're safe…"

"No way! Big brother-"

"GAAAAHH!!" Shido blew the blanket away and randomly moved his arms while roaring.

"Kyaaaaaa!" Kotori screamed in dread and ran away from Shido, leaving her big brother's bedroom.

Meanwhile, Shido, stopping with this joke for a moment, sighed and covered himself with the blanket again. His mind still fuzzy from the rude manner he woke up with, he looked at the alarm clock at his side.

5:56

"What a time to wake someone at…" His brain started to work now that he was awake and realised that it was all his fault.

The day before, their parents left on a business trip, leaving Shido and Kotori alone. Shido was in charge of the kitchen, so, since he was terrible at waking up, he asked Kotori to help him.

"Ah…" Shido exhaled and got up of the bed. He stretched his back while suppressing a yawn before his body relaxed again after hearing the satisfying crack on his back.

Something unusually dark caught his attention, and turning his head at his side, he found something he never saw before close to his alarm clock. It was a crimson and black card with the image of a single red eye with an edgy black cross as a pupil giving him a weird feeling of dread.

Shido put the card inside his pocket with the thought of throwing it away in a trashcan before he walked out of the bedroom. While Shido was walking across a hall, a mirror momentarily caught his attention.

At the other side of the mirror, there is a blue-haired boy of 16 years with tired brown eyes wearing a pajama that was giving back to him a lame look.

Letting out another sigh, Shido descended the stairs and entered the living room, where an unexpected sight welcomed him.

In the living room, the wooden table that should be standing on its feet was tilted towards him, as if it turned into a barricade. Behind it, a head with red twin-tails was slightly quivering.

A smirk appeared on Shido's face before he silently approached the side of the table, and found Kotori sitting behind the table hugging her knees.

"*Inhale* Graaaaahh!!"

"Kyaaaaaa!!!" As Shido grabbed her by the shoulders, Kotori let out a scream filled with despair.

Shido chuckled and said. "Calm down, calm down! I'm my usual self."

"...Ah? B-Big brother?" She cutely called, and Shido nodded.

"Yep, that's right."

"You… You're not scary anymore?"

"It's alright now. I'm Kotori's friend." As Shido talked to her in baby talk, Kotori relaxed her body.

Shido let go of her and stood up, then he put the table where it belonged and went to the kitchen. "I'll go to make breakfast right away."

After he prepared the pan for making breakfast, he walked to the fridge to fetch some eggs, when he found Kotori watching the TV on the sofa, more specifically, a seemingly boring news program.

(--Early this morning, in the suburbs of Tenguu City-)

"Huh?" Hearing his hometown's name being mentioned, Shido's attention went to the TV and raised an eyebrow.

"Did something happen?" Shido leaned over the counter, separating the kitchen from the living room. On the TV's screen, the image of a street that was destroyed was being displayed.

"...Ahhh… So it was a spacequake."

The spacequakes were an abnormal phenomenon of the shaking of a wide area. It was the generic term given to explosions, quakes, and such things that happen for unknown reasons at random times and places. It didn't matter if it was in the air or sea, not to talk about the land.

The first time that it happened was 30 years ago, in the middle of Eurasia. It was as if God pictured the world in Paint, and decided to use an eraser at maximum size right in that spot, without any warning.

In the six months that followed, around 50 similar incidents happened all over the world, but on a smaller scale.

"But it suddenly stopped happening for a while, right? Why did it start increasing in frequency again?"

"I wonder why…?" Kotori tilted her head, also seemingly oblivious of the answer.

Surprisingly though, even after the spacequake happened, even with destroyed streets or buildings, the JSDF team put together for the security against these spacequakes were able to fix everything in an insanely short amount of time.

"Doesn't it seem like the area around here has a lot of spacequakes? Especially last year."

"...Hmm, seems that way, huh. Maybe it's a bit early…"

"Early? What is?" Shido asked.

"Nnn… Nophing."

Shido tilted his head in a suspicious manner, not because of her words, but rather how she spoke at the end.

Shido silently circled and walked at the side of the sofa where Kotori was sitting on. She probably noticed this since she was gradually turning her face away as Shido approached her.

"Kotori, turn this way for a moment."

"..." She didn't answer.

*Bonk!* Giving a small punch on Kotori's head, she turned around with a jolt while a weird noise came from her throat.

At that moment, Shido found a lollipop in her mouth and sighed. "As I thought… Hey, haven't I told you not to eat sweets before meals?"

He grasped the stick of the lollipop and pulled, but Kotori resisted by pouting.

Shido was a bit exasperated and looked all over Kotori's body, trying to find a spot where to hit her that wasn't her cute face. In the end, he gave up and let go of the stick and rubbed Kotori's head.

"...Jeez. You'd better properly eat your breakfast!"

"Ohh! I love you, Big brother!" Shido waved his hands and returned to his work.

"...Now that I think about it, today's the middle school opening ceremony, right?"

"That's    right!"

"Then you're coming back at lunchtime… Kotori, any requests for lunch?"

After Kotori thought it thoroughly, she shook her head, and then suddenly stood up. "Deluxe kids plate!"

It was a lunch item for kids offered at a nearby family restaurant. Shido straightened his body, and like that, gave an apologetic bow. "That cannot be prepared in this store."

"Eh?" While sucking on a lollipop, Kotori replied with a dissatisfied voice. Shido gave a loud sigh and shrugged his shoulders.

"Whatever, nothing I can do about it,    it's a special occasion so let's eat out for lunch."

"OHHHH! Really!?"

"Yeah. Then, let's meet at the usual family restaurant after school." Shido said, and Kotori rubbed her hands together in excitement. "No going back on your word! It's a promise! You have to be there even if an earthquake starts or a fire erupts, or a spacequake happens, or the family restaurant is occupied by terrorists!"

"No. If there are terrorists there, we won't get to eat."

"You have to be there!"

"Fine, fine, I got it." Hearing Shido saying that Kotori vigorously raised her hands in the air in an excited manner. Shido did not even consider that he might have been a bit too generous.

From tonight onwards they would have to eat meals at home for a while, but today's the opening ceremony for the two of them. This much luxury should be fine. Well, who knows whether a kids lunch that costs 780 yen counts as a luxury.

"Nnnnn..." Shido stretched lightly and opened the small window in the kitchen. The sky had cleared up.

It seems like today will be a good day; It looks like today will be a good day; Shido thinks that today will be a good day…

Today won't be a good day.
