Osman handed his horse's reins to a soldier and stood before the thick stone walls of the armory. The structure, which resembled a fortress from the outside, was a true symbol of power and discipline with its bold lines and imposing stature. The Ottoman coat of arms shone above the gate; the intricate carvings etched into the stones proclaimed the importance of this place as vital as the heart of the state. Taking a deep breath, Osman wondered what awaited him inside and stepped through the wide iron doors.
The sharp scent of gunpowder and scorched metal immediately filled his nose. His eyes caught the sight of craftsmen feverishly working, iron tools glinting in the flickering light of lamps hanging from the ceiling, and apprentices scurrying back and forth. The hammering sounds echoing from the walls filled the space with a constant hum, demonstrating the workers' discipline. The armory was not just a production site but also a prime example of order and efficiency. Walking forward with deliberate steps, Osman surveyed his surroundings and thought to himself, "This structure looks like a fortress, but it's one built for the battle itself. Here, the weapons of the future are being forged."
At that moment, a blacksmith set down his tools and shouted with enthusiasm:
"The Sultan has arrived!"
His words echoed through the room. Workers immediately stopped what they were doing, gathered, and bowed respectfully before Osman. The hammers fell silent, leaving only expressions of deep gratitude in their wake. Standing tall in his elegant yet majestic robes, Osman looked at them. Despite his young age, his determination and authority inspired confidence in these people. Among themselves, they thought, "How young and regal our Sultan is."
Osman spoke in a calm yet profound tone:
"We are all grateful for your efforts. Every weapon you produce here is not just a shield for this state but also for the safety of our people."
The workers' faces shone with pride at his words. Sensing Osman's sincerity, Master Rüştü stepped forward and bowed respectfully:
"Sultan, it is an honor for us to be worthy of your praise. We are merely doing our duty."
Osman smiled slightly and nodded:
"If I give you your due credit, it's because you deserve it. Today, I am here to see you and your work. Show me the different sections of the armory. This place is not only important to me but also to the future of our state."
Master Rüştü quickly composed himself and began to introduce the armory. He took Osman to areas such as the foundry, powder house, assembly room, storage, and inspection room, providing detailed explanations along the way. Each section had a unique function, showcasing the impressive organization of the facility. As Osman carefully examined every detail, he thought to himself, "This structure is more efficient than I imagined. The production and assembly processes resemble a modern manufacturing system. Especially the standardization of measurement units is the key to increasing efficiency in such places."
Osman paused for a moment and turned to Master Rüştü:
"Master Rüştü, you must have heard of standardization. Have you ever thought about this concept before?"
The master replied in a somewhat humble yet determined tone:
"Yes, Sultan, but I have only ever heard about it."
Adjusting his robe, Osman continued:
"What if we applied standardization not only in measurements but also in parts? For example, we could have certain-sized parts produced externally and assembled here. Materials like wood can be sourced externally, while strategic parts are manufactured here."
Master Rüştü's face lit up.
"Sultan, this is a brilliant idea! Such a system would speed up production and reduce waste."
Osman turned to Hasan, who was standing behind him, and commanded:
"Hasan, give the flintlock rifle we brought from Europe to Master Rüştü."
Carefully, Hasan handed over the rifle he had carried on his back to the master. After examining the rifle for a while, Osman asked:
"How long will it take you to standardize this rifle for production? Also, craftsmen knowledgeable about this work will soon arrive from the Netherlands."
Master Rüştü inspected the rifle carefully, and after a brief silence, replied with confidence:
"Sultan, I can guarantee that we will standardize this rifle and begin mass production within 1.5 to 2 years."
A satisfied expression appeared on Osman's face.
As he listened to Master Rüştü's assurances, Osman pondered the future for a moment. If they could successfully standardize and mass-produce this rifle, the strength of the Ottoman army would significantly increase. The idea of selling old weapons to the states involved in the Thirty Years' War was both a financial opportunity and a way to enhance Ottoman influence in the region. This thought made him even more resolute.
Osman glanced around the armory once more. Within these stone walls, there wasn't just the scent of iron and gunpowder; the strength of a nation was being shaped, and its future was being written. Each worker was a hero in the rise of the state.
All the craftsmen and workers stood respectfully behind their Sultan. Osman turned to them once more and spoke loudly:
"What I see here is not just the strength of the Ottoman Empire but a force that will protect the future of everyone living on these lands. You are not merely craftsmen but the hands that elevate this state and the shields that defend this nation. Never compromise on your work. I thank you all."
These words further deepened the respect and loyalty in the workers' eyes. Master Rüştü and the others bowed in deep gratitude before their Sultan. Osman walked toward the door with measured steps. Before leaving the armory, he turned once more and listened to the sound of hammers echoing within the stone walls. Those sounds reminded him of the Ottoman Empire's glorious past and its hope-filled future.
When he stepped outside, the morning sun illuminated the stone walls, making the armory look even more like a mighty fortress. Mounting his horse, Osman turned to Hasan:
"Hasan, expedite the sale of the old weapons. The goal is not only revenue but also strengthening our hand in Europe. Plan this as soon as possible."
Hasan respectfully bowed and set off to carry out the orders. Osman pulled the reins of his horse and slowly rode away from the armory. Inside, he felt the weight of a major decision and the excitement of a hopeful future. The hammering sounds that followed in his wake seemed like the harbinger of the state's rebirth.
