Chapter 74
“Hi. Sorry I’m late. We had an emergency at the office. As always.” He walked over to me and laid his hand on my shoulder with a reserved glint in his eyes.
Fuck that shit, I wasn’t having any of it. I stood, flung my arms around his neck, and squeezed. Hard. “I missed you,” I whispered.
His hands slid around my waist and he hugged me back. “You, too.”
A giggle from Jane broke us apart. “What’s so funny?” I asked.
“No, no,” she said and waved her hand dismissively. “Nothing. Go on. Don’t let me interrupt.”
I mock-scowled at her and gave my man a peck on the cheek before heating up his dinner and pouring him a glass of wine. The rest of us agreed to hold off with dessert so we could enjoy it together.
We chatted as Vee ate, but the ease that we’d enjoyed before was gone and the anxious buzz appeared in my stomach again. I tried not to fidget, but my fingers wouldn’t obey and started tapping out scales on the table.
