“He even dropped hints when we met with clients,” he continued. “Such a successful young man. Someone like him would make a perfect partner for you. I mean, what the heck?”
I chuckled. It was funny, in a sad kind of way. “Seriously?”
He rolled his eyes. “I know, right?” He heaved out a loud sigh. “I’ve thought about it a lot. Especially after Momma died. I’ve woken up in the middle of the night lots of times. My heart beating so fast I was afraid I’d have a heart attack like Momma.” He looked down at our joined hands and his thumbs drawing circles on my skin. “Sometimes I feel like they brainwashed me,” he mumbled. “It sounds ridiculous, I know. But the way I feel now, I…I can’t understand how I could sacrifice our relationship for the stupid notion that you’re not good enough. When nothing could be further from the truth. I mean, I was young…but that’s hardly an adequate explanation.”
