The path winded and eventually led us to a glowing clearing with trees that curved into a canopy of smooth wiring branches with dangling moss.
What I thought was dew reflecting in the moonlight was actually bioluminescence - the sort I knew to exist some nights at beaches. But this wasn’t under water, this was over grass and dirt.
“Look,” Rowan whispered.
I followed his gaze and saw where the forest floor glowed electric blue under his footsteps, creating a long and obvious trail.
“Beautiful,” I whispered back.
Rowan set me down carefully. “I recommend taking off your shoes,” he said as he slipped off his own.
I followed suit. The grass felt perfectly soft beneath my feet. Firm and healthy. Just a little wet.
Rowan set our shoes atop a thick low hanging branch.
Like a dog playing in the snow for the first time, I took off just to see how much ground I could cover and brighten.
