Chapter 29: He Has Me Whole

Jasper returned some minutes later with a cup of tea for me. I had composed myself enough to be present, even if I was still upset.

Feeling that time was of the essence despite it all being pointless, Rowan excused himself so that he might hurry to the Crimson City, where he had historians who would tell him all they knew of the banishment curse on the Ivory Kingdom and any means we might have of working around it - both to reunite me with Tulip and to get me inside without inviting an invasion from the Ivory Kingdom.

Rowan kissed my forehead before he left. Jasper noticed, seeming mildly surprised in his stillness, but he said nothing.

This left Jasper and I alone in the living room, sitting on opposite couches.

“How is she?” I finally asked, knowing he would know who I was talking about.

“Fifi?” He sighed. “She’s… Well, she’s about as fine as you, I imagine.”

“Can I talk to her?”

He waved a hand toward the threshold as if to say, ‘Be my guest.’
