Chapter 52: Reflections in the Mist

The cool morning air enveloped the academy courtyard. Ren sat under a tree, lost in thought. The quarterfinals had left him with a lot to think about.

'There are many aspects that I can improve, the use of different weapons is not to be underestimated, and combined with a good strategy between ninjutsu and genjutsu they can create a devastating effect, now that I think about it I haven't seen Kurara use ninjutsu, I wonder why…'

"Hey, mysterious guy!" Jun'ko's voice interrupted his thoughts. She approached, dragging a still-sore Aoi and a half-asleep Shinji.

"Technically," Aoi muttered, adjusting his glasses with his unbandaged hand, "I should still be in the infirmary..."

"The infirmary is boring," Jun'ko huffed, plopping down next to Ren. "And besides, we need to discuss our favorite sleeper's performance against Yukiko tomorrow!"

Shinji yawned, small coral crystals forming absentmindedly between his fingers. "Hmm... maybe I should invent a new Super Mega Karatachi Ice Breaking Technique..."

"If you use that name," a calm voice said from behind them, "I'll freeze more than your coral."

It was Yukiko, who had approached the group without them noticing. Jun'ko jumped, while Aoi began frantically flipping through a book.

"Um... we were just talking about thermodynamic theory applied to... penguins!" Aoi stammered, earning incredulous looks from everyone.

A slight smile curled Yukiko's lips. "There's no need to lie. And Shinji..." She turned to the coral boy. "I hope you'll be awake from the start tomorrow. I don't like wasting my ice."

"Aww," Shinji yawned, "and here I was, wanting to use my coral duck..."

"Mizutani," Yukiko suddenly said, her tone more serious. "I would have liked to fight you in the arena. Your style... hides more than it shows."

Ren kept a neutral expression, Yukiko's antics having become almost tragicomic in his eyes.

In the distance, a lone figure watched the scene. Misaki quickly looked away when Jun'ko burst out laughing at another of Aoi's blunders, the sound of their familiarity echoing in the courtyard.

On the academy's rooftop, two ANBU watched the scene.

"An interesting generation," the one with the wolf mask muttered.

"Perhaps too interesting," the one with the crow mask replied. "The village is changing. These kids... could see times very different from the ones we know."

"If they survive long enough."

_

The afternoon brought with it an unusually thick fog as Fujimoto-sensei called everyone into the arena for the official announcement of the semifinals. The ANBU were more numerous than usual, their white masks glowing faintly in the haze.

"Tomorrow," Fujimoto-sensei announced, his voice cutting through the fog, "the semifinals will begin. First match: Kurushimi Misaki versus Koshima Kurara."

A palpable tension ran through the arena. Misaki, standing in the shadows, exuded an aura of cold determination, while Kurara methodically checked her weapons.

"Second match: Yuki Yukiko versus Karatachi Shinji."

Yukiko nodded imperceptibly, while Shinji... snored softly, only waking up when a small ice crystal touched his cheek.

"The winners will face each other in the finals," Fujimoto concluded. "Remember: you are not just fighting for yourselves, you are the future of Kirigakure."

As the students dispersed, the mist seemed to thicken, as if it too was awaiting the clashes that would reveal much more than just winners and losers.

Ren stood back for a moment, watching the figures recede into the mist. His gaze briefly met Misaki's, and for an instant, he saw something in her eyes - not the ferocity of her kekkei genkai, but a loneliness that was strangely familiar.
