Hokage's Office (Kamui's Point of View)
Walking here had been interesting. It was a novel experience to perceive the village completely through her seismic sense after her recent improvements. It was this experience that truly showed her how much absorbing that yang chakra had helped her connect to the world. It wasn't obvious back on Shinobu Island, but in Konoha, the improvement was clear as crystal.
Although she was temporarily blind, the only thing that it would probably affect would be her ability to read and she had a feeling that even that could be fixed with more training.
'This must be how the Hyuga feel. To be able to see so much at once is something else. It really strikes home just how impressive the byakugan is to be able to do so much naturally, even if their omnidirectional range is short. Thinking about it, the Hyuga should be able to do what I did in that meeting room easily. It would just require training in genjutsu. Maybe I should suggest it to Hinata.' Kamui offhandedly thought.
["Very true. Doing so should be fairly easy were they to attempt to mimic the Uchiha's ocular techniques. Then again, maybe they don't do it so that they can have the moral high ground when defending their own techniques."] Yume thoughtfully pondered.
'*Sigh* What a waste of potential.'
Present in the room were Minato, Mikoto, Kushina, Itachi, Naga, and Yugao. Himiko was asked to wait outside and would either be brought in after this part was over or rescheduled for later tonight. They had intended to discuss her part during the council meeting, but Minato decided against it after remembering the words Yugao had told him in private.
Kamui was ready to explain what she knew of her situation.
He had expected it at some point, just not this soon. Then again, according to Yugao, there had been quite a few instances on the mission where the mission parameters changed or were impacted by whatever these details were, so it made sense.
The family's presence was obvious. Yugao's presence was necessary since she was her jonin sensei. Naga was apparently Kamui's 'summoning animal', so his daughter would probably tell her anyways; plus, part of it pertained to her.
If who she'd introduced as her mistress was accurate, Himiko likely already knew part of Kamui's story. Still, she was new and untrusted. It would be wise to approach her situation with caution, at least until they heard her story.
"Alright. Are you ready to begin Kamui?" he asked his temporarily blind daughter.
She nodded without hesitation.
"I am. Let's begin I'll try to be as comprehensive as I can, but the beginning portions are fragmented, so it won't be perfect. The tale will start out very outlandishly, so I ask you to hold out on questions until we get to my birth; it would be counterproductive to do otherwise." She resolutely replied, getting everyone's attention.
Many in this room have waited a long time to hear this. That said, none were prepared for what they were about to hear.
"Many years before I was born, in a dimension far away from our own, a powerful divine beast was severely injured by an ambush from the resident gods. Her goal had been to succeed her progenitor's legacy by absorbing her other half and using that power to lead her race to prosperity. From his complete power, she inherited his spiritual powers, wisdom, and elemental proficiency. The other inherited his overwhelming physical body.
"She failed. Not only was the other half slain and sealed in the body of one of their children, but she was forced to escape the dimension all together to prevent them from getting both halves. To do this, she used a forbidden technique that threw her into the space between dimensions, a location no god could follow. After all, no other god had the proficiency with spatial powers necessary to do so.
"Normally, it should have been impossible for her to find, let alone enter, a new dimension. She was too weakened and on deaths door, a state making the task monumentally more difficult. One day though, a god from this dimension reached out into the space between dimensions and contacted her; he invited her in.
"He didn't have any conditions as long as she came; he simply stated that an outsider's presence as strong as hers would disrupt the certainty of an unfavorable, inevitable outcome he foresaw. Although she doubted his true intentions, she didn't have any other options. Unfortunately, even with his invitation, her body was no longer strong enough to survive the trip, so she settled on her backup plan.
"She used the last of her remaining power to eject her divine core, where her soul and power dwelt, from her body and had that be taken to the world instead. Her goal was to create a successor. Since she was fated to die, her legacy would live on.
"Therefore, she asked the god to direct it to a powerful and compatible host. That host was Mikoto Uchiha, the human female of breeding age with the strongest yin-based divine heritage within the range of the core's entry point, specifically one capable of wielding all the elements at full maturity.
"When the core first entered mom, she had a few choices. Wait for her to conceive and choose one of her natural offspring or to take matters into her own hands. At this point, with her now limited consumption, she probably could have existed in her core form for about two decades, but that would've wasted time and wouldn't have guaranteed a fully compatible vessel. With that in mind, she decided to take the latter option.
"She used her own soul as fuel along with the remnant traces of divine power from the god that brought her here to use a power she didn't normally have access to after separating from her other half. She used the power of creation for a brief instant. With that, she recreated the DNA she had previously used for her own human form and used it to fertilize one of mom's eggs that she deemed had the most suitable combination of genes. That's how I was born, so technically, I'm actually only half related to my Uchiha siblings."
Everyone's eyes were wide at the tale so far. It sounded so outlandish, like a fairy tale or fictional story.
Mikoto couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had always thought it was weird. Somehow, she had gotten pregnant after not actually planning to. When Fugaku was alive, they didn't sleep together for pleasure; it was purely to make successors. That was just the kind of relationship they had, purely functional for the clan's benefit. They didn't dislike each other, but they didn't love each other either.
After she conceived Sasuke, she hadn't planned to get pregnant again. Still, her husband wanted a third child, a spare Uchiha heir in case Itachi becomes Hokage and their unborn son Sasuke isn't strong enough to become the clan head. She didn't like that philosophy though and had applied a special seal invented by Tsunade Senju that killed sperm cells immediately when they left the man's penis.
Legend has it that Tsunade created it so that she could have pleasurable sex with her boyfriend without getting pregnant before marriage. It was specifically made to be effective without him being able to tell the difference. After his death, she worked with Konoha's hospitals to sell it publicly to help fuel her drinking and gambling habits. Mikoto herself was actually the first recorded failure due to Kamui's birth, though it's looking like that's no longer accurate.
Although hard to believe, a god-like being forcefully inducing pregnancy and preventing any medication from causing problems long enough for her to notice answered a deep-seated question she'd had for years. It also explained why Kamui hadn't inherited any of her father's traits. She looked nothing like him, behaved nothing like him, and hadn't matched for any of his recorded DNA when tested for parentage.
The good thing for her was that those tests were run secretly; the results she has on record were fabricated by Minato. Surprisingly, he believed her from the start when she explained that she'd never been with another man. It actually had a lot to do with the fact that the other side of Kamui's genes simply didn't match any known bloodlines. With her powerful genes, her father couldn't have been a civilian and Konoha has blood samples of most major clans in the elemental nations that were collected by the second Hokage over his lifetime; that practice was inherited by T&I in later years.
Basically, while this story was crazy, it helped Mikoto get some closure on some really disturbing questions she'd had regarding Kamui's birth.
Minato and Kushina's reactions were a lot simpler, curiosity. If it weren't for not wanting to disrupt the flow of the story, they'd be asking a lot more questions right now. Again, Minato was ecstatic that the compatible host just so happen to be an Uchiha and that circumstances allowed Fugaku to pacify the clan. Otherwise, this blessing may have been a nightmare for the village.
Yugao, Itachi, and Naga's reactions were tamer. The whole tale was fascinating, but they weren't inherently curious people by nature. At least, their curiosity couldn't compare to the others in the room. They were content to listen and ask their questions at the end. Itachi especially was interested in seeing how Kamui's, now identified to be different, 'paternal' genes specifically influenced her skillset and personality; that could wait though.
Seeing that everyone was waiting until the end to ask their questions, Kamui continued, "As you know, my birth was on the day of the nine-tails incident. Well, prior to that, my predecessor had sealed herself inside of me like one would a tailed beast. Her goal was to train me in my formative years and carefully guide my growth as my chakra supply increased. Then, something drastic happened that changed everything."
Minato interrupted her, "The nine-tails incident, right?"
Kamui nodded.
"At the time, she didn't know what the nine-tails was, just that it was an incredible mass of the native dimension's energy given a conscious. Normally, she could have left it alone. The problem was that every fiber of its being was defined by hatred and malice. It was the exact opposite of what she wanted her successor to grow up with. However, the beast's energy was still useful to her core which, at the time, was composed primarily of her own dimension's energy and incompatible with this one's. It would have taken years, possibly a couple of decades, to convert enough of it to chakra to be useful. The beast's presence presented the best opportunity to correct this."
Minato and Kushina's widened as they started piecing together where Kamui was going with this.
"Once the beast was sealed, it couldn't use its chakra to fight back, only its mind. Well, compared to my predecessor, his mind might as well have been that of an ant; even in her diminished state, the beast stood no chance.
"With that in mind, she used the last of her power to destroy the beast's consciousness while retaining its memories, did the same with the fragment of Indra Otsutsuki that transmigrated within me like he does with everyone born to our clan, and gathered that collection of memories together. Then, she used herself as the base to create a new helpful personality, tied to my own consciousness, that inherited most of the memories of the two and a very small fraction of hers. Since her memories would either bring unnecessary pain or would be useless in this new dimension, she discarded most of them.
"The result was a consciousness that was created to guide me, would eventually merge with me, and could serve as a repository for the vast library of memories collected from both Indra, the nine-tails, and anyone else I pull memories from; her name is Yume.
"I don't know nearly everything she knows since my current capacity is limited, but with her acting as a librarian, I'm rarely starving for knowledge on the true nature of this world's history, at least on the shinobi side. I first met her when I was eight. Unfortunately, or otherwise depending on your viewpoint, she will eventually disappear and merge into me when I fully inherit my predecessor's power.
"In that sense, I'm not a jinchuriki. The power is mine and will likely disappear in the event of my death."
That answered another question Minato's been dealing with. Where did Kamui's portion of the nine-tails go? That confirmed it; it was effectively dead. From what he now understands, the good is that Kamui will have a much easier time than Naruto will since she won't have to wrestle control over the beast's chakra. The bad is regarding the village's longevity. After Kamui passes from either death or old age, the village won't have that portion of the nine-tails. It's gone for good.
Then again, if what she said was true, Kamui's lifespan would likely far exceed the village's. Still, he couldn't rely on her staying in the village forever; that wouldn't be realistic. They would need to create a replacement deterrent for that half of the nine-tails.
While he was thinking about that part, Itachi caught another detail.
"What did you mean when you mentioned Indra Otsutsuki's transmigration?" At his question, the others in the room focused in, Mikoto especially as she had a similar question.
Kamui pondered how to properly explain it; it was a little complicated.
"Well, from what Yume was able to gather, the sage of six paths had two sons. Indra, the Uchiha's ancestor, was the eldest and inherited his father's eyes, spiritual chakra, and a portion of his vitality, while Asura, the Senju's ancestor, inherited almost nothing. Long story short, due to Indra wanting to solve all of his problems with power, inspiring fear in his followers, and doing nothing to foster the unity his father sought, the sage of six paths chose his younger, weaker brother as his successor.
"Since his younger brother didn't have the same overwhelming power, he accomplished his tasks by working together with the people, inspiring hope, and building connections. His results were much sturdier and in-line with his father's ideals.
"As such, the sage gifted the remainder of his power to his youngest son. Jealousy clouded the eldest's mind, causing him to kill his two followers to awaken the mangekyou and then use that power to try assassinating his father and younger brother in a fit of rage. The youngest son won and the eldest fled.
"Eventually, the eldest devised a transmigration system that would allow him to project his chakra to all of his descendants. The system would influence all who carried his eyes, the sharingan, to forever carry his grudge against his brother's descendants by rewarding people who fit his ideals with more of his chakra.
"For example, Itachi is selfless, patient, and is understanding enough to realize grudges often do more harm than good. As such, he wouldn't receive much if any of Indra's chakra. On the other hand, let's say you have an Uchiha who lost their loved ones due to war. If that Uchiha let their hatred fester, fostered their natural-born arrogance, and tried to gain power through isolation, Indra's chakra would improve their strength drastically at the cost of their mental stability. As they dove further into madness, their chakra would darken, its density would sharply increase, and that would spur the rapid evolution of their mangekyou's abilities.
"Seeing the system his brother created, Asura vowed to stop him. Unfortunately, he wasn't as talented as his brother in spiritual chakra control, nor did he spend any amount of time developing a similar method. He only learned of his brother's plans in his later years. Therefore, Asura only had the means to transmigrate into one person at a time.
"According to the nine-tail's memories, Asura's transmigrant and Indra's strongest avatar of that particular generation fight to the death in an eternal cycle of hatred. The good part about that is that Indra's system can't regenerate the chakra lost after an avatar's death very quickly. If his avatar dies, the rest of the clan is spared most of his influence for decades during the system's recovery."
As Kamui paused to catch her breath, the other's pondered the ramifications of what she just explained. Mikoto and Itachi could confirm some of the story. Bits and pieces were recorded in their clan's records. They were usually told from the Uchiha's perspective though, glorifying their own pursuits.
If what Kamui explained was accurate though, then everything made sense. It explained why so many clan members fell to their own inner darkness, disproportionately to the other clans. They used to blame it on the sharingan, but that explanation always felt insufficient, like it was only half the full story. If there was a bloodline-based spiritual system in place rewarding that kind of behavior, of course many would follow that path; it was literally a path to easy power.
It also explained why Uchiha who unlocked their mangekyou often ended up with increasingly darker chakra. The power-hungry ones seemed to draw overwhelming power from thin air and went from B to S-rank shinobi in a matter of days. If that behavior was encouraged, then the sorrow-filled clan members would throw themselves into it without hesitation. Considering the bloody history of the continent, such a system is fatal for a clan's mental stability.
"Kamui, is there a way to know who the Asura descendant is and are there powers that come with it?" Minato asked, more interested on that point.
If there is truly a confrontation between Asura and Indra every generation then by finding Asura in history, Indra would follow.
Kamui nodded.
"Asura was granted the power achieved by the sage of six paths when he became the Jinchuriki of the ten-tails. From Indra's memories, that power would eventually culminate with the jutsu, 'Sage Art: Wood Release: Shinsu Senju, Veritable 1000-Armed Kan'on'.
"From what I can tell, it's the most powerful known wood release jutsu. Everything needed to achieve the jutsu would come naturally to the transmigrant: chakra volume, sage mode, wood release, tailed-beast taming, positive outlook, etc. I would imagine any wood release user outside of myself would be a strong candidate. The others would be too hard to look for in the early stages." Kamui explained.
She was also interested in who the transmigrant was. There just wasn't a way for her to check.
"Naruto…" Mikoto muttered in shock.
Everyone's eyes darted to Mikoto in shock at what she just muttered. Most of them had one question in common.
'Is there something I missed?' They thought in their own heads.
Minato slowly nodded in realization.
"I agree." Then, he looked up at the group. "For those of you who hadn't heard, team 7 was just brought back from their mission. During their encounter, Naruto performed a powerful wood release jutsu, one he was never taught. From what he told Mikoto, he learned it and others from his dreams, though he didn't remember the specifics. We have another wood release user in the village, but his ability to use it isn't natural. It was a result of Orochimaru's experiments. Naruto's should be natural though."
"Are you serious, ya know?" Kushina asked suddenly, her verbal tick unconsciously rearing its head.
While she obviously knew team seven was back, she was more concerned with their well-being and less so on the full details. Plus, the group had just returned earlier this morning and were still resting. Naruto and Sasuke were scheduled to report tomorrow morning; Sakura obviously couldn't join.
Kamui was happy for her brother. She was glad he had something unique to himself. She would need to figure something out for Sasuke though. It wouldn't do for him to get jealous and be influenced by Indra's will.
"We've talked about a lot, so let's wrap this up. Kamui, what do you know about how your sharingan works and how is that related to both your contract and the subsequent disappearance of most of your chakra?"
Now this question confused both Kushina and Mikoto. They hadn't known anything about her losing her chakra. Mikoto had picked up on the signs, but this was the first time it'd really come up. Itachi had long noticed but decided to patiently wait for an explanation.
Yugao and Naga perked up as well. Before, everything Kamui described was outlandish and fantastical. There was a lot of humbling ancient history and context on how the founding clans became the way they were. It was interesting, but ultimately unusable for them.
For Yugao specifically, this part would directly impact her role as Kamui's jonin sensei. It would affect how they went about taking missions and would provide more information on the girl's abilities.
Naga was just curious about her new friend's powers.
Kamui nodded, beginning the fun part of her explanation. "What many don't know is that the sharingan is composed of not two, but three stages, the sharingan, the mangekyou sharingan, and the rinnegan. From mangekyou and up, all abilities gained are unlocked in the body. The eyes are just the easiest place to channel those abilities. For the Uchiha's in the room, the Susanoo is the easiest example. Most Uchiha forget that it can be used without any eyes at all; the clan's records make that point perfectly clear."
Mikoto nodded at the statement. This was well known to her, especially after having the mangekyou for so long. She'd figured it out a decade ago and had taught it to Itachi when he unlocked his.
"Since my body holds the divine core of my predecessor, it interacts with my sharingan in an interesting way. In short, my divine blood drew out the latent rinnegan abilities in my DNA and combined them with my predecessor's. Each tomoe in my sharingan represents a different ability. Each ability is based on one of the paths of the rinnegan which has been expressed in a way compatible with my divine core's power.
"When I awakened my sharingan, I automatically awakened the human path's ability to interact with souls and the preta path's ability to absorb chakra. In my case, rather than direct absorption, it gave me the ability to read the memories imprinted in the spiritual component of chakra and easily manipulate my own chakra externally.
"Later, I manifested the ability to interact with spatial energy, which is derived from the deva path. While the deva path is known for its manipulation of gravity, gravity is a property of space-time; I don't know how to mess with gravity though.
"Then, I awakened the ability to manipulate life energy, though I've never really trained it so far. That was derived from the asura path. I don't know what all it lets me do.
"Specific to Naga, Yume forcefully manifested my fifth tomoe, the one based on the animal path. The animal path allows one to pass their traits down to a recipient if they have contracted them as a summon. In the rinnegan's case, this is used on corpses by inserting them with chakra receivers. Technically, this could be applied to living beings as well, but that would require unlocking the rinnegan's true power which would then require mastering the ascended version of sage mode.
Even Indra couldn't do that before his passing, though that could be due to him spending his younger years working on his transmigration system. Asura was gifted it, though his was weaker since it was technically his father's.
"In my case, I created a 'summoning' contract with Naga by contracting the bestial core that was trying to assimilate into her and am currently passing down my human form ability. It's what's allowing Naga to live a normal life again. Due to the influence of my fourth tomoe, my animal path equivalent only works on the living. According to Yume, she doesn't believe I can do anything special to corpses. In fact, the rinnegan's mastery over life and death will likely forever be out of my reach since that requires a connection to Yomi, a connection I can never have." Kamui clinically explained.
"*Chuckle* Well, that's a relief. As much as reviving the dead would've been nice, it's the respect for the cycle that keeps us grounded. I don't know what I'd do if you started reviving people left and right, calling yourself a god. It would be too easy to fall into that complex." Minato joked in amusement.
"*Chuckle* Well, it would certainly be easier to lure Tsunade back if that were the case." Mikoto jokingly replied.
The adults in the room chuckled amusedly. Although people felt sympathy for her loss, her action of running away had become something of a joke among the upper-tier Konoha shinobi. After all, half of shinobi life is about enduring loss. Even though 'those two' were her world, she only experienced such loss two times.
In comparison, shinobi like Kakashi lost his father, his beloved teammate, the girl he loved, and did all of this at a far younger age than her. He may be emotionally stunted as a result, but he's still trying to improve, even if it's a little at a time. In comparison, the great Senju simply gave up on herself.
"Kamui, what happened to your chakra?" Yugao broke the merriment and asked the question she was really here for, the one that made their last mission much harder than it needed to be.
The room stopped as Minato's sigh was like thunder in the accompanying silence.
Kamui shook her head at her sensei's 'enthusiasm.'
'Way to kill the mood…' She resignedly thought.
She went on to describe the process of integrating the blue core and reiterated what Yume had explained to her during Amenominaka's initial manifestation. That included the nature of yin and yang chakras, the condition of her chakra, and its relation to Kaguya Otsutsuki.
Kaguya's name got Minato's attention. After what recently happened with the Hyuga clan and this new knowledge on transmigration, his mind started forming hypotheses left and right. If the Hyuga descended from the same line as the Senju and Uchiha, then researching this common ancestor would help solve that case.
Over the following hour, the group continued to ask Kamui questions to expand on what she had told them. There were a lot of details they wanted clarification on, especially regarding the fragments Yume had from her predecessor's previous dimension. Although that was the least relevant, it still stoked the most curiosity. Kushina's questions primarily fell into this category.
Mikoto, on the other hand, gained a deeper fascination with Kamui's words regarding the rinnegan's abilities already being present in Uchiha members' bodies, just lacking the life force to employ them. She had lacked a direction to progress to the next level and this just gave her some new ideas, not only for herself, but the clan. Later, she even planned on asking Kamui if there was something they could do to cut off Indra's influence on their clan; that would likely be a big project though.
Itachi's questions fell into that category as well.
Minato's questions were largely on her biology. He wanted clarification on her needs so he could make sure she was taken care of. With her being shown off publicly in the upcoming chunin exams, he needed to know as many of her quirks ahead of time as possible.
Yugao, as expected, mainly stuck to her capabilities, and clarifying questions on her limitations, growth expectations, her elemental sensing ability, etc.
Naga didn't ask any. She would have plenty of time and could tell this was a family moment. It was only at Kamui's request that she was even here. She had no idea why Kamui trusted her so much, so quickly.
In the end, the family, minus Minato, went home to rest and relax. Hearing that Naruto was in the hospital observation ward along with his team, Kamui planned to visit him on the way there with her mother and aunt. Naga was following Yugao to her home. She didn't feel comfortable living with the Kocho just yet, especially since Reina still needed to stabilize everything after recent revelations.
Minato made sure to pull Kamui to the side before she left so they could plan a late-night dinner with Himiko to discuss her situation. Minato needed a couple hours of rest before he opened that can of worms.
There, the long explanations are done. I needed to do this eventually; I just hadn't realized I set myself up to do both back to back. Also, everything I reiterated includes context that will be important to the story going forward. The only exception is anything related to the 'Doulou Dalu'-based universe. There won't be any gods or interferance of any kind from there outside of what's already been defined in the story.
