Last time:

After everyone was checked over for injuries or possible poisonings the two Konoha teams and Tazuna got back on the road. Maya stretched and said, "Well, we got nine of the ten. It's a shame about Rokushō Aoi escaping alive though. It would have been great to recover the Sword of the Thunder God."

"He didn't seem like that great of a swordsman to me." said Naruto. "If that blade hadn't been made of lighting chakra…"

Yūgao replied, "Rokushō Aoi isn't as powerful as he portrays himself to be. He is dangerous but he is not exceptional. If he hadn't run away; you and Asuma would have killed him for certain Naruto-kun. He relies on that sword too much and doesn't have the skill to use the Sword of the Thunder God to its full potential."

Asuma nodded in agreement. "Still, we have to stay alert in case more enemies attack us."

And now onwards to Wave Country…

Chapter 41

Wave Country, Shore

It was a silent trip by boat to the Island Country of Wave and through the fog the genins saw the massive structure of Tazuna's bridge. Tazuna proudly pointed out the 'super' bridge to the members of Team 7 who were riding with him in the small boat before the boatman shushed him. "Gato's men are everywhere!" hissed the boatman. Team 11 was water walking just inside the ninja's visual range of the boat to keep watch…

When the boat arrived on the narrow shore the boatman said, "This is as far as I go. Good luck Tazuna." Tazuna thanked the man and turned back to the shore where both ninja teams were standing at ready.

Tazuna was shocked and asked Hinata, "How did you get here ahead of us?!"

Hinata smiled mysteriously and said, "We walked Tazuna-san." Then she added, "Don't worry about the details."

Tazuna sweat dropped. "Well, my house is in that direction."

"Let's go then." said Asuma. "Team 7 assume a diamond formation around Tazuna." He hand signed to Yūgao [Later.] The purple haired sword mistress nodded and all of Team 11 vanished in body flickers.

"We need to learn to do that technique Asuma-sensei." said Choji as he took the right side.

Sakura took the left and said, "I agree with Choji."

Asuma lit up a cigarette and said, "All in due time my students."

…

The misty area had Tazuna a bit paranoid of another ambush but the walk to his house near the ocean was trouble free. Team 11 walked out from around the house and Naruto said to Yūgao, "The area is secured. Hinata-chan says there are two in the house; a young boy and a grown woman."

Yūgao nodded and relayed the information to Asuma. "Looks like we're in the clear for now." said the ANBU swordswoman. She turned to Naruto and said, "Set up a barrier for defense in case the house is attacked."

Naruto looked thoughtful for a second and the said, "On it, sensei!" He got out five pieces of parchment and created four shadow clones without hand signs. "Five-point barrier guys!" said the original and all five blondes started industriously creating fuinjutsu tags. Within ten minutes Naruto had a tag on the roof and each of his clones put a tag equidistance from the original on the four walls. They all then said, "Five-point barrier, Fuin!" A four-sided barrier appeared briefly on the house before it faded away. The four shadow clones dispelled and Naruto said, "Success!"

Yūgao nodded in satisfaction at her student's work. Asuma asked Naruto, "What does this barrier do?"

Naruto simply answered, "This house won't be damaged short of an attack with multiple explosive tags Asuma-sensei."

Asuma whistled and said, "Excellent; it will be easier to sleep at night now."

Tazuna knocked on the front door and entered saying, "Tsunami, Inari, I'm home!"

Tsunami came into view and said, "Thank the gods you're home Father! We've been worried sick!"

Inari poked his head around the corner and said "Grandpa, you're home!" He hugged Tazuna before looking at the ninjas.

The bridge builder said, "Tsunami; Inari, these are the super ninjas that brought me back safely." He quickly introduced Team 7 and wondered where Team 11 vanished to now. Tazuna sweat dropped and said, "Well anyway, there are four more but-"

"They are out getting the lay of the land while we protect you and your family Tazuna." explained Asuma as he finished his cancer stick. "They'll show up later."

Tazuna shrugged and said, 'It must be a ninja thing.' "I'll introduce you all later. For now, Asuma-san and his Team are protecting us."

…

Team 11 was in the main village in the Land of Waves and saw how destitute the village was. There were several thugs in the area patrolling the streets and Yūgao and her team were hiding in plain sight under henge as a family of ordinary villagers. They appeared to be a Mother and three young children. Two of the thugs decided to shake the four down for their belongings. "I don't recognize your faces." said one of the thugs. He was tall with his brown hair in a topknot. He also sported an eye patch. "You aren't from around here. This is Gato's territory and you have to pay a toll to get through this town."

"But we have nothing to pay with." said Yūgao in a trembling voice. "We're dirt poor as everyone else. The other men took our money we hoped to buy supplies with."

"No…" said Maya. "…Please don't hurt us."

"I guess your Mamma will have to pay with her body then little girl." said the thug as he leered at Yūgao's curves. "Come on Zōri, let's have some fun."

The one called Zōri was shorter than his partner and wore a blue cap over his gray-white hair. He chuckled. "Okay Waraji, I'm game." He looked at Yūgao and said, "Unless you want your kids cut down, you'd better cooperate honey."

The two samurai wannabes drew their swords and motioned the 'family' into a nearby warehouse. Seeing Zōri bar the door from the inside so the three 'children' couldn't run, Waraji said to Yūgao, "Do a good job babe and we'll all leave happy."

Yūgao's expression changed from a frightened look to a sinister one and she said, "Funny, I was about to say the same thing." She made a hand sign to her team that said, [Take them alive].

The three 'little children' disappeared and Zōri and Waraji saw nothing but black a second later.

Waraji woke up in the same warehouse he'd been in with the woman and her family. The last thing he remembered was a sensation of his neck being chopped. "W-what the hell?" he tried to move only to find he was tightly secured to a support beam with ninja wire constricting his every movement. He cried out as the wire cut into his skin.

He heard a female voice say from behind him. "I see you are awake Waraji. We'll get to you in a minute. The rest of my team is questioning your buddy Zōri so sit tight and be quiet."

Waraji struggled and only found the wire constricting on him from behind. "Oh, fuck this hurts!" he bellowed as the wire tightened more.

Maya in her kunoichi gear came around in front of him and kicked Waraji hard enough in the gut to knock the wind out of him. She said, "What part of 'be quiet' did you not understand idiot?"

The would-be samurai gasped out, "Who are you?"

The silver haired kunoichi smiled under her face mask and said, "Feel free to try and guess. You've crossed the wrong group of people."

"You'll pay if you mess with me! I work for Gato!" yelled Waraji before he got kicked again harder in the same place that made him spittle and caused his eyes to water. He was gasping for air when Maya grabbed Waraji's face and rammed his head hard into the beam he was tied to. He saw stars and heard Maya say, "Shut up. You'll be singing like a bird soon enough."

Waraji was trying to figure a way out of the dire situation he was in but a floor hatch in the warehouse opened beside him revealing Naruto's masked visage. The blonde's deep azure pools glittered in the low light. "We're ready for contestant number two." Naruto stuck a paralysis tag on Waraji's forehead and said, "Fuin." Waraji felt his entire body go rigid and was terrified that he couldn't move at all. Naruto said, "Let's untie him so he can see his buddy Zōri…or what's left of him…"

Tazuna's House

Choji and Sakura were helping Tsunami cook up dinner for the family when Team 11 arrived. Tazuna eagerly introduced the other team of 'super' ninjas to his family and Asuma exchanged information with Yūgao. "The two we interrogated were fairly well informed about Tazuna and his family." said the purple haired sword mistress. "It turns out that aside of Rokushō Aoi that Gato has another high-level ninja under his employ. Unfortunately for us it's Kurosuki Raiga formerly of the Seven Swordsman of the Mist."

Asuma grimaced. "The Thunder of the Hidden Mist went rogue and vanished over a year ago. Raiga is bad news. Kiri wants him dead and the Kiba Blades recovered. He has an astronomical price on his head in the Bingo books."

"The Kiba Blades are known as the Thunderswords for a reason." said Yūgao. "Worse still, Raiga has fully mastered them. He won't be a pushover like Aoi. Both of us may have to go all out to take him while the genin take on Aoi. It would almost be easier to eliminate Gato with an assassination. Gato's men told us where the little tycoon is living. He's set himself up in a mansion at the opposite end of the island from the village."

"So you want to cut the head off the snake so the body will die?" asked Asuma. Seeing Yūgao nod he said, "If we kill Gato his army of thugs wouldn't have any sort of organization, but they might run wild too."

"It's a calculated risk." agreed the ANBU jonin. "It would be worth it to scout Gato's Headquarters out regardless."

The bearded jonin nodded in agreement. "I take it your team has already discussed this?"

Yūgao said, "We haven't planned anything but we did confer about it. I wanted to discuss it with you before we made such an overt move. It could turn into a huge battle if Raiga is there after all."

…

After some discussion with both teams the Konoha ninjas decided that demolishing Gato's powerbase gradually would be a better option than killing Gato outright. With that they set their plans into motion…

Gato's Mansion

It was 2AM in the morning when Team 11 arrived at Gato's hub of operations. Naruto had created enough 'flame' tags to burn down a forest so committing a little arson on Gato's Mansion would be child's play. Naruto and Maya slipped passed the loose patrols of thugs and started planting tags along the power lines to make it look like a quickly spreading electrical fire. Hinata and Yūgao remained up on the hill that looked over the mansion in case Raiga or Aoi showed up. If either of them did the two kunoichi would intercept them so Maya and Naruto could pull out.

It took nearly an hour of sneaking around in the dead of night before all of the flame tags were set and Naruto and Maya returned to where Yūgao and Hinata were. Naruto set the activation tag on the ground and looked at his sensei. The purple haired jonin nodded and Naruto channeled a chakra pulse through the tag causing the electrical generator to burst into flame and the other tags to ignite swiftly in series to make it look like a rapidly expanding fire.

Within minutes complete chaos engulfed the mansion and everyone in it. Inside Gato was terrified and had to jump out a second story window to save his skin. Not only was the shipping magnate suffering from burns, but he also had glass cuts, bruises and a major concussion from landing head first from a second story window. On top of that his mansion burned to the ground because there was no firefighting equipment that could reach the remote mansion in time. Gato not only had a very bad night; he suffered a tremendous financial loss in the process…

Tazuna's Bridge

The next morning Rokushō Aoi was spying on the bridge using binoculars. He saw both Team 7 and Team 11 on guard duty and wondered about the fires last night. 'Did the Konoha ninjas do it? They are all here and accounted for. Was it an actual freak generator fire? Gato's in deep shit when his thugs find out their payroll all burned…'

What Aoi didn't realize is he was looking at Naruto's shadow clones henged to look like Yūgao and her team. The real Team 11 was asleep at Tazuna's house in case any intruders showed up. They woke up around noon and quickly got dressed and ready to go. Yūgao quickly addressed her team. "Things went well last night and Gato survived as planned so we're going to keep picking at his defenses. We took out his finances so next we'll attack his manpower. Down at the docks is a warehouse where Gato keeps his illegal drugs according to the townspeople. It's also the barracks for most of his thugs that weren't living at the mansion. That's what we're going to take out next. We just need to figure out how to go about it and make it look like an accident."

Team 11 had lunch and stealthily infiltrated the warehouse district to find a heavily guarded warehouse near the sea. Gato had set up a temporary headquarters there since his mansion burned. It was built on the docks and stood primarily on posts over the sea. 'It's well guarded and easily defensible out here over the sea.' thought Maya. 'I wonder what would happen if those posts supporting it mysteriously rotted out…?'

…

"Acid would do the job." said Yūgao. "Since Gato is living there now it would be ideal to strike while the iron is hot."

"If we can acquire the needed acid then I could seal it in tags and set it off with a timer tag." said Naruto. "It wouldn't be so obvious if it rotted and then collapsed in broad daylight."

Hinata smiled. "That's clever Naruto-kun. The question is where do we get the acid we need?"

"They use muriatic acid for concrete etching. It works on metal too." said Maya. "I'll bet Tazuna has barrels of the stuff for his bridge. You have to etch concrete before you paint it. We did that back at the Natsume dojo when we built the place."

"We'll ask Tazuna when we go to 'relieve' the shadow clones of us then." said Yūgao with a gleam in her eye.

…

"Muriatic acid?" asked Tazuna. "Of course we have it. It won't be used until were ready to start painting to weatherproof the bridge though. Why do you ask?"

"Let's just say we ninjas have use for a few gallons of it." Yūgao replied. "The less you know the better."

The old bridge builder raised his eyebrows and wrote the location of the storage vault for the acid on a piece of paper. "Thank you." said Yūgao as she read the location. "This will make matters much easier."

…

Naruto created several 'acid tags' by modifying the formula for the 'blue paint tags' he'd used during his ANBU Brat training. Once he had the acid in hand Naruto carefully put the corrosive liquid inside the containment seals on the new tags. "This should make for a nasty mess." he thought aloud. Putting one of his new tags on a nearby tree stump Naruto set off the tag from a safe distance and it performed as advertised. After the acid did its job the stump simply looked rotted out.

Yūgao used a water jutsu to dilute the acid and all signs of it disappeared. The jonin ruffled Naruto's blonde hair and said "Excellent Naruto-kun! This is going to work even better than I thought."

…

Gato's Headquarters, Warehouse District

That night Raiga was having a heated argument with Gato. "What do you mean my payment is 'delayed?' You asked me to be your bodyguard and now you want me to take out those Konoha ninjas? That's Rokushō's job! I don't work for free. If you want them dead Gato you'll be paying me in advance!"

Gato said nonchalantly, "The money will be delivered by ship soon but I want those Konoha ninjas dead now! Rokushō Aoi isn't up to the task."

"I guess that's your tough luck the Gato." said the former Seven Swordsman. "No money; no deal." Raiga left irritated at the gall of the little Tycoon.

'You'll regret this Kurosuki Raiga. Mark my words!' thought Gato to himself.

As Raiga walked off the docks he sensed the presence of four chakra signatures and smiled. 'Looks like the Konoha ninjas are already on the move anyway. Oh well, it's not my business.'

Yūgao sensed Raiga from her place under the docks. She'd already signaled her genin to stop moving and suppress their chakra. Raiga stopped outside of the warehouse and wasn't moving. 'He's sensed us; I just know it!' thought the purple haired jonin. 'I really don't want to risk my genin against one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist.' Then she heard Raiga chuckle and he moved on. Letting out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding; Yūgao set her genin team back to work.

…

The next day around 3PM in the afternoon, disaster struck Gato a second time. There was a groaning noise over the waves outside of his office of timber giving way and the entire warehouse full of drugs and all the guards slid into the sea. Unfortunately for Gato most of his men were there and the calamity proved fatal. The waterlogged Gato only survived because he was outside taking a smoke break instead of inside the warehouse. It gave him a beautiful view of his men and ill-gotten gains descending into the ocean before his horrified eyes…

Ironically Gato's men's bloated corpses washed up on the shore right below Tazuna's bridge the very next day.

"Ooooops!" said Maya. "Looks like that worked out better than we planned."

Without the thugs menacing the village that only left Rokushō Aoi and Kurosuki Raiga…

…

Tazuna's House

"I can't believe all this 'bad luck' has mysteriously happened to Gato." said Tazuna as he enjoyed a celebratory swig of sake over a big dinner at home with the Konoha ninjas. Even Inari was in higher spirits. Tazuna alone knew that the 'disasters' that hit Gato were as a result of the Konoha ninjas. Everyone else thought it was karma that had come back to bite Gato in the ass.

Tsunami said, "With all of the thugs working for Gato gone the people of the town are starting to regain hope at last."

Let's hope our good fortune lasts." said Tazuna. "More workers are coming back to work on the bridge every day."

…

Asuma was talking to Yūgao and the six genin outside Tazuna's house. The bearded jonin lit up a cancer stick and said, "Finances? Check. Manpower? Check. Raiga and Aoi are the only reason not to take Gato out now."

"…And there is no reason we can't operate openly now that the vast majority of Gato's men are at the bottom of the sea." said Sakura with fire in her eyes.

Sai nodded. "Gato took over the largest hotel in the village. There is no reason we can't strike tonight and take him out."

"Team 11 will guard the client this time." said Asuma. "I think it's time Team 7 took a turn."

Everyone nodded in agreement and Yūgao said, "So be it."

…

Raiga's Hideout

"We can take them Raiga!" said Aoi. "With both of us we can take out the two jonin and the genin can be swept aside."

Raiga shook his head. "Forget it Rokushō. I'm strictly in it for the money. Gato's broke and I'm leaving. I would advise you to do the same."

Aoi mentally growled. 'Fine. If Raiga won't help me, I'll take Asuma and the rest of them out by stealth.'

…

Hotel Nami

Team 7 stuck like lightning at precisely midnight. The night was cloudy and overcast and the moon and stars were obscured. The hotel staff had been located and evacuated by Team 11 earlier that day, so Team 7 was free to eliminate Gato by any means necessary. Asuma and Choji sneaked in via window on the ground floor while Sai and Sakura climbed to the roof and entered via an access hatch they scouted out during the day.

Asuma had trained his team well in silent killing. Since Gato drove all the people out of the hotel except his own men there was nothing but targets left for Team 7. Sai moved like a shadow as he slit another throat in the darkness. He hand signaled Sakura as she moved forward and took the next guard. The pair had been moving like clockwork eliminating guards floor by floor. There were only seven floors in Hotel Nami so the bloody work was going fast.

Down below Asuma and Choji were working their way up. There were naturally more guards below that were active but Asuma wasn't called an elite jonin for nothing. The bearded man looked back at Choji who was keeping up well enough during the grisly wet work. Twice a sentry tried to set off an alarm only to have his throat slit by the big boned boy.

The members of Team 7 met on schedule at 1AM on the fourth floor where Gato had a luxury suite. He never heard Team 7 slither into his room like death itself. The business tycoon was splayed out on the bed and woke up dead when Sai stuck a kunai in his throat…

…

The next morning Aoi stood in shock and disbelief as he stared at Gato's head on a pike in front of the Hotel Nami. 'Genin did this?' thought the crooked ex-jonin. Word travelled fast throughout the entire Country of Wave that Gato was dead and Gato's few remaining men fled as quickly as they could. Aoi was in disbelief and travelled under henge to see Gato's remains himself. It was hard not to stare. Aoi knew the midget had a streak of bad luck but this…It was ruthless even by Konoha standards. Suspecting there was an ANBU squad running around the area; Aoi decided it was time to get the hell out of town.

…Up above on the rooftops Hinata was looking directly at Aoi and called her sensei and teammates on the radio. "He's under henge but the green traveling cloak is real. Shall I tail him?"

The radio crackled when Yūgao responded. "Affirmative Hinata-chan. Keep us updated but don't get spotted."

Aoi left town aimlessly. 'I know Raiga already left. I'd best follow suit.' As he came to the road leading towards the water where he could hire a boat back to the mainland, he stopped dead in his tracks at the sight of ANBU Cat standing there waiting for him at the docks. The missing nin immediately drew the Sword of the Thunder God and said, "If you know what's good for you ANBU, step aside! I'll show no mercy to anyone who bars my path."

"You sure talk big Rokushō-san." said ANBU Fox from behind the missing nin.

Aoi whipped around just in time to see a capture tag activate and freeze him in place. His eyes widened as ANBU Cat slapped a paralysis seal on the back of his neck and said, "Seal." The chakra stopped flowing to the Sword of the Thunder God and ANBU Fox gingerly plucked the legendary weapon from Aoi's grasp. Unable to move; Rokushō Aoi was a sitting duck. He heard Cat behind him say, "It's too bad Aoi; Konoha wants the Sword of the Thunder God back but you aren't necessary."

"W-wait!" was the last thing Aoi said in terror as Cat removed his head with one precise sword strike.

Hinata and Maya came out of the trees on either side of Aoi's body. "I can see why those masks are so handy." said Hinata. "He was petrified at the sight of you, sensei."

"ANBU masks are intimidating." agreed Maya. "I'm under the impression Rokushō Aoi was a gutless wonder regardless."

Yūgao sealed away her mask and said, "Seal up both the head and the body." She nodded as Naruto sealed away his own mask and said, "Seal up the Second Hokage's sword as well. I'll use an earth jutsu to hide the mess."

…

The truth of Gato's mysterious accidents was revealed by Tazuna in a tipsy speech during one of the many celebrations that took place in Wave Country. Both Asuma and Yūgao were initially concerned that Kurosuki Raiga might still be in the area but a boatman revealed the missing nin had departed peacefully after paying the boatman well for transport. It was an immense relief to both jonins that they wouldn't have to deal with the former Seven Swordsman of the Mist.

Tazuna's bridge was completed three weeks later under the careful watch of the two Konoha ninja teams. The grateful citizens of Wave Country named their new roadway 'The Great Konoha Bridge' in gratitude for the ninja's service. It was amidst many cheers that Teams 7 and 11 departed Wave Country over the bridge as they waved goodbye…

Fire Country/Wave Country Border

"…And now to head west to Konoha." said Asuma in a cheerful mood.

"I can't believe we were out on a mission for an entire month." said Choji. "I've missed home."

Sakura nodded in agreement. "I can't wait to see my parents. Mom and Dad have probably been worried sick about me."

Sai noticed Team 11 was completely on alert. "Why are you all so tense?" asked the pale skinned boy.

"The last time we tried to relax entering Fire Country we got jumped by an S-Class missing nin." said Maya as her blue eyes darted about carefully.

Naruto nodded grimly and Hinata added, "It was a fierce fight that we barely got out of alive."

Sakura gulped and said, "Since you put it that way maybe we should be a little more on guard."

"Better safe than sorry." said Yūgao in an approving tone.

…

The trip to Konoha proved to be uneventful which the two teams were glad for. Reporting into the Mission Hall they turned Rokushō Aoi's body over to forensics and the Sword of the Thunder God over to the Hokage herself. She was immensely pleased to see the weapon recovered. Tsunade said, "Well done. On behalf of the Senju Clan and Konoha I thank you for returning my Granduncle's sword." Team 11 beamed.

Natsume Clan Home

After bidding their sensei goodnight, Maya led Naruto and Hinata back home eager for a soak in the family hot springs and a real home cooked meal. They were eagerly welcomed home by Natsu and their family.

"It sounds like you are becoming skilled saboteurs." said Hanako humorously over dinner as the genin spoke about their mission.

"Best of all we didn't get attacked on the way home!" said Naruto boisterously as he dug into a second helping of food.

"I'm sure Tsunade-sama must have been thrilled that you all recovered the Sword of the Thunder God intact." said Aya enthused.

Hinata nodded. "She seemed delighted. I wonder what she'll do with it. It's technically a Senju Clan heirloom so it might eventually go to Mito-chan."

"That would be so cool!" cheered Hanabi with stars in her eyes.

Hanako chuckled and said, "That would be a few years from now Hanabi-chan. It's not something for a child after all." Hanabi pouted.

...

Hours later; Naruto bid his sleepy girlfriends goodnight with a kiss each. The blonde was tired and dozed off as soon as his head hit the pillow…

…Only to be awakened by Natsu pounding on his door early in the morning with a summons from the Hokage to report to her as ANBU Fox at 8AM. "Oh jeez, what is it now?!" grumbled the blonde to himself.

After breakfast Naruto was greeted by Hikari, or rather ANBU Gazeru since she was on duty. He put on his ANBU Fox mask and nodded at his purple haired girlfriend. "Let's go Gazeru." The pair disappeared in body flickers.

Hokage Tower

Tsunade welcomed her younger cousin to her office and he saw ANBU Dragon, Jiraiya, Hiruzen and Hanako were all there as well as ANBU Sloth. 'Why do I have a very bad feeling about this…?' thought Fox to himself.

After activating the silencing seals, the Fifth Hokage said, "ANBU Fox; the protective seals of the Village are in dire need of an upgrade and some date back as far as my Grandmother Mito-sama. I want you to put the skills of yourself and the ANBU Sealing Team to work upgrading our defenses in preparation for a possible conflict in the near future. We will help you in any way we can of course."

Naruto looked at the map of the village showing the various types of seals protecting them from invasion and was appalled. The seals themselves were good work but they were hopelessly outdated. Several rows were newer and Naruto's finger traced over them.

Jiraiya said, "Those were the work of Uzumaki Kushina; Fox."

Fox nodded and thought to himself, 'Kaa-chan…' "We'll start with the most important militarily strategic buildings and the outermost wall. After that we'll start the inner layer of fortifications and work our way outwards. The barrier Team will need to be involved as well. Time is of the essence." he said taking charge. "Jiraiya and I will be making the seals and the Sealing Team will be applying them." 'Good gods what a mess this is…'

Naruto had his work cut out for him…
