Menma and his advisor Asahi looked at the long-range seals that were paired with each Pteranodon's life energy. They were passive seals that were normally red but turned black when an animal died. That way if a rider went missing, they would know the general direction of where to look.

"The seals worked as planned Menma-sama." said Asahi. "No doubt they perished in the lava."

The black-haired Uzumaki looked out in the direction of the Lava Sea and started shedding tears. "Goodbye Kanna-chan…" he said sadly. "I will have a memorial built for you along with Mother and Father's. I…I'm so sorry!" he cried.

…

Later that morning the matching seals on the stables were noted to have turned black and the news spread like wildfire throughout the Tiger Tree Village. All of the people were grieving and Menma in particular. The Uzumaki Clan Leader truly loved his twin but knew she had to be eliminated for the greater good.

"This will be a week of mourning." announced Menma to the village sadly. "There will be no search parties as I cannot risk the lives of more precious people to look for remains in the Lava Sea. Let us all pray that Kanna and her brave companions died instantly."

He broke down into tears and said, "Now I will grieve alone…"

Naruto growled, "We can't go back now. It looks like we'll have to move forward…"

Chapter 58

Ōrora, Caldera Island

Team Kuro was quite angry that someone was trying to sabotage their mission. There was no apparent reason why and given they were on a mercy mission it made no sense. "When I find out who is behind this; heads will roll…" growled Naruto.

Yūgao and the others were upset as well. The biggest problem was most Uzumaki Clan Members were taught explosive seals be the time they were ten. Almost anybody with access to the stables could have done the fuinjutsu work.

"God damn bastards." grouched Maya. "And we still have yet to get the Dragon Flower."

Hinata asked, "Kanna-chan, do you have any idea who could have done this or why?"

Kanna thought for a moment and said, "My brother would be in a position and would have a motive because he was afraid Naruto planned to take over…but I can't imagine him doing this to me. I'm his twin sister for the love of the kami!"

"Was he that afraid?" asked Yūgao. "Of Naruto I mean?"

Kanna nodded her head. "Michiko said he was. She never lied to me."

"Then we'll just have to have a nice long talk with Menma when we get back." said Naruto.

"How do you intend to get back?" asked Kanna.

Naruto gave a fanged smile and said, "I hid a few of the Second Hokage's Hiraishen seals along the way of our journey. Don't worry. I can get us out of here at will. But the Dragon Flower comes first."

"So that's why you were painting those extra seals on the floors Naruto-kun." said Hinata. "That's my man! I was curious because they didn't look like your regular barrier seals."

Yūgao sweat dropped. "And here I was thinking there was no way back."

The group was soon on their way to the ziggurat to see if there were any more clues to be found. When they made it back to the top where the onsen had been, they found the water had drained and the grave was opened revealing a staircase down. Hinata looked with her byakugan and said, "There is a pool of chakra filled water about ten meters down."

"Nothing ventured; nothing gained." quipped Yūgao "I'll take point."

As the group went down the stairs the passage got foggy even to Hinata's doujutsu. When they emerged from the fog they were in a different place. The sun was high in the sky above them and they could see the clouds below them in the distance.

It was hot and humid without anything but forest as far as the eye could see until the clouds obscured their sight.

"So by going down we went up?" asked Kanna. "It's beautiful here."

"I'd expect the air to be thin and the air cold at this altitude." said Maya. "I wonder exactly where we are."

As they came down the stone stairs; Kanna and Team Kuro realized that the way back was obscured by fog and that they were nearing the forest floor.

When they got to the bottom the stairs, the steps vanished completely and the five shinobi were standing on the forest floor. The place reminded Team Kuro a lot of the Forest of Death back home in Konoha…only bigger in every sense of the word.

"Everything here is massive like on Caldera Island." said Maya in awe. The heard a sound live thunder rumbling in the distance and felt the earth shaking. "What is that?" asked the silver haired beauty.

That's when Kanna heard the familiar voice of one of her giant tiger summons. "What are you doing here Kanna-chan? This is the Land of the Greater Summons. You and your friends are in great danger here."

"Bengaretora*①?" asked Kanna. "How did you get here?"

Bengaretora answered, "I live near here at the Tora Hunting Grounds. Come! A Thunder Lizard nears. Trust me, you don't want to mess with the likes of them." He didn't give them time to introduce themselves and said, "Come! Taigāresu awaits us." before taking off like a bullet.

As the five ninja followed Bengaretora they were speaking in hushed tones. "Who is Taigāresu, Kanna-chan?" asked Hinata curiously.

"Taigāresu is the Tiger boss and head of the Tora Clan." explained Kanna. "She is beautiful and wise. Address her with the greatest of respect. Bengaretora is my good friend. "He was the first tiger I ever summoned. I call him Bengare for short."

Bengaretora quickly led the group to a section of forest surrounded by high reeds and filled with small rivers. They were looking around at the many giant tigers that were watching the humans curiously as most had never seen one before.

Taigāresu was a colossal Tigress that dwarfed even the toad bosses. Her voice was deep and rich but decidedly feminine. She towered over the humans and said, "Kanna-chan, how did you get here? And who are your companions?"

Kanna bowed as did the others. The redhead answered, "Taigāresu-sama, these are my friends from the Elemental Continent. This is Uzumaki Naruto, Natsume Maya, Hyūga Hinata and Uzuki Yūgao. We came here through a passage on Caldera Island. My friends have come in search of the Dragon Flower just as my ancestors did."

"Hmmm…" said Taigāresu as she looked over Team Kuro. Then she stared directly at Naruto. "Those blades…You are Uzumaki Ashina's descendant, aren't you?"

Naruto nodded. "I am Taigāresu-sama."

"Ashina was the only one offered the Tora contract who refused." said the Tiger boss. "Do you know why?"

"Perhaps he already had another contract?" asked Naruto.

"You are correct." answered Taigāresu. "Our leader at the time was highly offended and enraged that Ashina refused. That was my Grandfather." She saw Naruto's hand gently rest and his calligraphy brush rather than his blades.

Then Taigāresu let out a thunderous roar of laughter. "You are of Ashina's line indeed. He also used fuinjutsu and defeated my ancestor. They then discussed things peacefully and the Tora Contract was signed by Kanna-chan's ancestor in Ashina's stead. You and your friends are welcome he in the Tora Hunting Grounds."

Everyone in Team Kuro let out a breath they didn't realize they were holding. Naruto bowed and said, "We are honored Taigāresu-sama. Thank you for welcoming us into your home."

The Tiger boss nodded and said, "Kanna-chan, I will talk to you privately. Follow me back to my den."

Kanna smiled and waved to Team Kuro before leaving them to their own devices. The Konoha ANBU Team found themselves immediately surrounded by playful tiger cubs that had never seen a real human. That's when a very massive, elderly tiger hobbled out to see what all the commotion was.

One of the cubs said, "Honored Elder, shouldn't you be sleeping?"

The Elder grunted and "I'll do as I please little one. I smelled a scent from long ago and I came out to see with my own two eyes."

"But your two eyes can't see past your muzzle Jiji!" said another cub. The elder bopped the little one on the head and said, "Disrespectful brat!" which caused the cub to giggle mischievously. The Elder turned to Naruto and sniffed him. Then he squinted his eyes and said, "You smell like blood and ink just as Ashina-sama did. He really knew how to make a ruckus. What is your name cub?"

"I'm Uzumaki Naruto." answered the orange loving blonde.

"Maelstrom, eh? Seems appropriate for Ashina-sama's grandchild. I am Kodomo the Elder, the oldest and wisest of the Tora." said the old tiger.

"And I'm Kodomo the younger." piped up the mischievous cub. "Jiji here is ancient."

Naruto clapped his hands over his mouth thinking about himself and Hokage-Jiji's relationship and tried not to laugh. He said, "I'm pleased to meet you both." while mentally cracking up.

The Elder sighed and said, "I was about Kodomo-chan's age when Ashina-sama battled Taigākurō. It was a fabulous display. The Tora started learning fuinjutsu ourselves after that. It's amazing stuff. I intend to pass my knowledge of it down to Kodomo-chan here once he learns a bit of patience."

…

While Naruto was talking to the two Kodomos, Kanna was talking to Taigāresu. The Tiger boss said, "Kanna-chan, why are your friends seeking the Dragon Flower? Are they trying to make a youth elixir? That flower is dangerous in the wrong hands."

Kanna had a question mark above her head. "What's a youth elixir? The plague called the Withering that the Uzumaki Clan fought long ago has reemerged. Apparently, it's a kind of poison. The Dragon Flower is the main ingredient for the antidote."

Taigāresu relaxed a bit. "So they need to get some Dragon Flowers to cultivate for medicinal purposes?"

"Yes, that's why they risked life and limb to come to this place." replied Kanna. "The Withering poison is deadly."

"The Ancient One guards those flowers jealously because they prolong his life. Getting him to part with even a few will be very difficult." explained the Tiger boss.

"What is the Ancient One?" asked Kanna.

Taigāresu replied, "He is the Emperor of the Thunder Lizards and ruler of the Land of the Greater Summons. He was the one that ordered the great aqueduct system to be built thousands of years ago by humans though I don't know why. Then he drove your kind out because he felt humans were too dangerous to be controlled from what I was told."

Kanna was puzzled. "Then you've never met him?"

The Tiger boss shook her head. "To be honest the last being to see him aside of the Thunder Lizards was Uzumaki Ashina as far as I know. No one else was brave enough to enter his Palace. The Thunder Lizards worship him like a god and are very secretive about him…"

…

Kanna was soon explaining the situation to the others. Yūgao frowned. "It sounds like some reconnaissance is in order. If this Emperor of the Thunder Lizards is worshipped like a god; it could be like Numa no Mura all over again." All of Team Kura cringed in revulsion at that memory…

…

"…So you had to burn down a town full of demons?!" asked Kanna in shock.

Several giant tigers were listening to the horror story as well. Bengaretora was sitting with Kanna and said, "You are made of sterner stuff than I thought. To live to tell such a tale…"

Kodomo the Elder nodded and shook his grandson who had his paws over his ears. The little one opened his eyes. "Is it safe to listen now Jiji?"

The old tiger nodded. "It's alright now Kodomo-chan. It sounds like you could use some help from our allies in the Neko Clan. We felines have a loose alliance you know." The Elder looked up into the trees and saw two gold eyes. "Burakku*②; tell your boss that Kodomo the Elder may have found a worthy summoner for the Neko Clan."

A soft voice purred up in the branches and said, "By your leave Kodomo-sama."

The Elder looked at Yūgao and said "A black wearing ninja named Cat should have some comrades that are cats too. They are experts at stealth and reconnaissance. If you treat them well and as equals, I believe you will make fast friends."

Yūgao was surprised at the whole idea. "I never knew there was a summoning contract for cats."

The old tiger gave a crooked smile that showed a broken fang. "I'm sure they will give you a test to see if you are worthy. I don't believe they've had a summoner in generations."

That's when Burakku reappeared in the trees and said, "Kuroneko says he is curious Kodomo-sama. What is your name human?"

"I'm Uzuki Yūgao." said the purple haired swordswoman.

"Then try to catch me." replied the black cat as he vanished under a genjutsu.

Yūgao put on her ANBU Cat mask with a feral grin and vanished in a swirl of leaves. She hand signed ["Later!"] to her Team before she left and blended in with the silence of the forest.

"Looks like sensei is going to have some fun." said Maya humorously.

Hinata laughed as she watched Burakku fleeing from ANBU Cat up in the branches as they receded into the distance. "It will be good to have more friends and allies."

"That's only if she passes the test." said Kanna. "Or if the Neko really like her."

"Yūgao-sensei will catch Burakku." said Naruto. "I'd even place a wager on it."

"You don't need to Naruto-kun." replied Hinata. "She just caught him in the trees."

The Elder was impressed. "Burakku is an expert at stealth. I'm surprised she caught him with such aplomb."

Maya winked. "ANBU Cat is a sensor. She is very skilled at detecting targets."

…

ANBU Cat returned hours later from her trip to the Neko Clan Enclave with a two large Burmese Cats, a male named Kuroten and female named Aoi. Aoi was a deep blue-gray color and Kuroten was sable colored. They were fraternal twins and specialized in long range infiltration and stealth.

The two sleek cats were inordinately pleased with themselves to be the first summoned by Yūgao and considered themselves her personal summons. When the Neko Clan found out a new summoner was among them they all suddenly wanted to be summoned. As it was, Kuroten and Aoi were quiet professionals much like Yūgao so they got along quite well.

The purple haired sword mistress appeared with her two feline companions in a swirl of leaves. She said proudly, "Kuroten, Aoi; these are my loyal Teammates Naruto, Hinata and Maya. I hope you extend your friendship to them as well."

After the two Neko Clan members were properly introduced; Hinata marveled at the soft, almost melodic voices of the twin cats. Aoi was rather fond of her voice and preened a bit under all of the attention. Kuroten was less outgoing and stayed closer to Yūgao. All in all, Team Kuro really liked ANBU Cat's new companions.

Kuroten asked, "So what is our first mission together Yūgao?"

Team Kuro's leader said, "We need to do some recon work on the Ancient One's home. We need to know all the escape routes just in case things go south when we go in."

The two cat's matching golden eyes got big as dinner plates for a moment and then Kuroten said with a smirk, "You don't do things by halves do you?" Seeing Yūgao was deadly serious; he said, "Challenge accepted. I'm in."

Aoi was a bit more hesitant but decided to go. "As the more responsible twin; I have to keep Kuroten out of trouble you know." she explained.

Kuroten unsealed a book of maps of the Land of the Greater Summons that he and Aoi used as a guide for scouting missions The land was roughly circular with the Feline territories in the far west and the ancient one's palace in the far east.

"The Palace of the Ancient One is due east of here." said Kuroten. "It's arranged like a plus sign with the Royal Gardens composing about the front fourth of it*③ so the Ancient One can view his garden as he rests on his throne. Supposedly the whole place is made of gold and marble and is kept alight by massive torches at the top on two hundred meter columns that never go out. We don't know all that much about it because it's fifty kilometers deep in Thunder Lizard Territory."

"So how old is this information?" asked Hinata.

Kuroten said, "This section of the book is about three hundred years old. It's pretty outdated but that was the last time the Summon Animals had a conclave at the Palace of the Ancient One. It's hard to say if things have changed much."

Naruto perked up. "So the Greater summons had meetings together?"

The Elder Kodomo interjected, "At one time all summons were considered more or less equals under the Ancient One's benevolent rule but then he started casting entire Summoning Clans out around a thousand years ago starting with the Toads and the Snakes claiming they were plotting against him."

"Eventually the Ancient One grew paranoid and cast out anyone who questioned him. After that the conclaves grew smaller and smaller because everyone feared they would be cast out and have to settle elsewhere." said the old tiger. "That's how it was told to me anyway. There are probably older summons who know the story firsthand out there but I wouldn't know who."

Kanna looked troubled. "I wonder what Ashina-sama did to convince such a creature as the Ancient One to give him some of the Dragon Flowers."

"He probably fooled the Ancient One into a losing bet." said Naruto. "That's what I would do."

The girls all sweat dropped and thought, 'He's probably right…'

…

The next morning Team Kuro, Kanna, Aoi and Kuroten set out for Thunder Lizard Territory. As they raced through the forest canopy; the group moved a stealthily as possible to avoid attracting any attention. At midday they stopped and set up a camp to eat and rest a bit before moving on…

Kuroten said quietly as he ate fresh tuna that Team Kuro had sealed, "Ah…I have eaten like a king on this trip. Come what may, I shall die happy knowing I have a full stomach."

Aoi whispered, "Do not even joke about such things brother! No one is dying one this journey."

Yūgao nodded. "Aoi is right Kuroten. We won't be having any casualties on my watch."

That's when they heard the thumping of something monstrous nearby as it crashed through the trees. "Everyone by silent! It's one of the Thunder Lizards!" hissed Kuroten.

The earth shook as Team Kuro and the others got their first glimpse of a Thunder Lizard. The creature was about thirty meters long with a rhinoceros like appearance. This was a giant Triceratops*④. It looked around and muttered in a rumbling male voice. "I would have sworn I heard something over here."

Then he started munching on the foliage in a lazy manner as a smaller one rumbled up and started grazing too. The smaller one also was male judging by its voice. "Kaa-san says it's not safe outside our turf Tou-san. We should be careful."

"Son, I love your Kaa-san dearly but all she does is nag, nag, nag. I swear that it I had a bushel of grass for every time she complained to me…" said the Father.

Team Kuro sweat dropped as the Father bestowed his wisdom upon his son. The girls all thought '…Men.' and Naruto and Kuroten tried to be as unnoticeable as possible.

The pair of Triceratops eventually moved on and Team Kuro and company let out a breath of relief that they had the forest to themselves again. "So that was a Triceratops." said Aoi. "It was huge. They say the three horns are slow to anger but incredibly dangerous once they are riled."

The group continued onwards towards Thunder Lizard Territory after that discussing the many types of servants that the Ancient One called his own. They watched from the trees above as packs of Velociraptors patrolled the area looking for prey in the tall grass.

By nightfall the patrols calmed down and the shinobi were forced to go down into the tall grass where the Velociraptors had been. The grassy fields stretched a few kilometers and marked the border of Thunder Lizard Territory proper. They were about halfway across when a huge fireball flew over their heads forcing them all to hit the ground pancake style.

In the darkness nearby a massive Allosaur licked it's chops and said, "I don't see you but I smell you…" in a thundering voice. "I am the Boss around here! You won't get past me!" He stomped his feet several times before making his way over to Team Kuro's former position.

That's when he spotted Kanna. She was ducked down low but was upwind of the Allosaur when he unleashed another fireball at her. Kanna was fast though and body flickered to another position.

Yūgao stood up on his opposite side and yelled, "Over here moron!"

"Mokuton no jutsu: Great tree binding!" whispered Maya as tree roots spread around the Allosaur's left foot and ankle. The great beast had already started rapidly turning towards his right when his left foot was caught and he staggered and fell on his left side with an enormous crunch…His ankle had broken.

Naruto saw the soft belly of the beast was exposed and whispered, "Shuriken shadow clow jutsu!" as he threw three shuriken that multiplied into a wall of jagged metal. The abdomen of the huge Allosaur was ripped open and blood sprayed everywhere. The beast let out a guttural roar as it coughed up gouts of blood.

Yūgao signaled everyone to withdraw as she saw several Velociraptors headed their way rapidly. The group huddled downwind and the badly wounded Allosaur and the beast bellowed, "After them! After the ones who did this to me!"

The Velociraptors looked among each other for a few minutes until one said in a bird like voice, "It looks like we eat hearty tonight brothers and sisters. Boss certainly ate plenty of us."

The whole pack chattered among themselves about payback and proceeded to eat the massive Allosaurus alive. The screaming, bellowing and shrieking lasted until there wasn't a bit of meat or blood left on the bone of the Boss.

By then Team Kuro and company had long since crossed the grass border and climbed back into the trees on the other side. They watched the macabre spectacle from a distance and felt lucky to be alive as they hid under a genjutsu in the treetops…

…

The next morning there was a strange quiet as if the creatures of the forest were seriously spooked by something. The Velociraptor patrols had left the area when two Allosaurs came rumbling over to the remains of the much larger Boss that had perished the night before.

Team Kuro was listening to the pair of Allosaurs talk as they looked at the skeletal remains of the Boss. The bright green one said, "Well, looks like the 'raptors ate him but what took him down?"

The brownish one replied, "We'll never know. The 'raptors probably do but they are too smart to be here after they cleaned Boss's carcass. The ancient one will want a report."

"I guess we'd better set out for the Palace then." said the bright green one. "The chain of command will send someone out to take charge of the Velociraptor patrols soon enough."

As the two Allosaurs rumbled off talking to each other, Yūgao said to her Team. "Let's follow them from a distance by tree hopping. They should lead us straight to the Palace of the Ancient One."

As the Allosaurs seemed to be in no hurry, Team Kuro and Company travelled at a moderate pace for two days before they saw the massive structure that was the Palace. Kuroten's gold eyes widened and he said, "It looks like we made it this far. The Ancient One must be within."

Naruto saw the two Allosaurs come to the gates and bow before them where two even more massive Tyrannosaurs were guarding the entrance. One Tyrannosaur said, "Have you discovered what happened at the Central Territory Border?"

The bright green Allosaur replied, "Boss Allosaur is dead, we aren't sure what killed him but we're sure the 'raptor patrols ate his remains and scattered to the wind as they are prone to do. The Central Border is devoid of patrols for now."

"Tsk." said the larger of the two Tyrannosaur guards. "The Ancient One will not be pleased. Something powerful must have attacked Boss Allosaur. We will report to the Minister youngsters. You have done well."

The two Allosaurs quickly departed and the guards howled together in some sort of call. An old, gray skinned Giganotosaurus*⑤ came rumbling out of the Palace proper and said, "I have come as you called guards. What is it? Have you found out about the Central Border?

"We have Minister." said the taller guard as he explained the situation.

The Minister nodded. "It's been around a hundred years since something like this happened. Border patrol bosses have died fighting each other for dominance or of old age but…"

"What happened last time Minister?" asked the shorter guard.

The Minister said, "Believe it or not, it was those accursed humans that caused the trouble. They are tiny but extremely clever creatures. I will inform the Ancient One."

Being the Thunder Lizard's Minister, the massive Giganotosaurus showed no fear visibly but inside he was frightened of humans. After the aqueduct system was completed long ago; they revolted and nearly destroyed the Thunder Lizards. He knew the Ancient One wound never admit it, but he feared they would return one day…

Hinata watched with her byakagan as the Minister strode off in the direction of the palace and finally entered. His skin was so thick that he hardly felt the Hiraishin kunai lodge itself in his back.

Yūgao nodded and Maya and Hinata saw their boyfriend vanish in a yellow flash...

…

Naruto appeared on the Minister's backside and stuck to the Giganotosaurus's behind with chakra. Concealing himself as best he could with his cloak, the Uzumaki Heir watched as they crossed a massive field of violet colored Dragon Flowers. Then the Minister entered the throne room of the Palace and bowed before the Ancient One.

The Ancient One was a Shenlong*⑥ and towered over even the massive Minister. His Azure scales and serpent like body glittered and his eyes blazed with a golden flame. He hissed in an unpronounceable way that seemed to be his own language but Naruto heard his words nonetheless.

"And why have you brought a human with you Minister?" asked the Ancient One.

The Minister looked around frantically until the Shenlong said, "He rode your back in here without you noticing."

Naruto would have laughed at the Minister's face fault if the situation hadn't been so grave. He hopped off the back of the Minister a bowed to the Ancient One.

The Shenlong said, "Leave us Minister. We will talk with this little one alone. We have been…expecting him."

The Minister bowed and said, "As you command my Lord." Then he hurried out in embarrassment.

"We are Shenlong." stated the Ancient One. "You have travelled a long way to see us. What is your name little one?"

"I am Uzumaki Naruto and I have come here on a mission of mercy." said the blonde ninja with all the respect he could muster.

"One of the Uzumaki Clan. Ah, we should have known." said Shenlong. "Only a descendant of Ashina would dare to come here before us. What is your mission Uzumaki Naruto?"

"The Withering has returned and the Dragon Flower is extinct in the Elemental Nations." explained the ninja. "We are desperate to cure the Withering and need your help."

"So you would lay it all on the line to obtain the Dragon Flower and the way to make the medicine from it?" asked the Ancient One.

Naruto said, "Yes." with absolute conviction.

Shenlong asked, "And what do have to give us in exchange for such a valuable thing?"

"I have nothing save my life to give." said the blonde. "Or we could make a little wager…"

"Oh no! Ashina tricked us that way." spoke the dragon. "It seems you are him all over again." Then he began to laugh in a strange hissing way. It was not a cruel laugh but one of genuine amusement. "You have entertained us Uzumaki Naruto. Your ancestor Ashina did as well. We will grant you your wish. Should you return here seeking a Greater Summons come see us. Our door will be open to you."

Naruto saw a scroll appear before him. "Open that when you get home. Within lies the Dragon Flowers you seek and the instructions to make the medicine."

The blonde bowed again. "Thank you, Shenlong-sama. I will forever be in your debt."

"Until we meet again Uzumaki Naruto. We have spoken." With that Naruto vanished in a flash of light. The next thing Naruto knew was he and his travelling companions were standing in front of the gates of Konoha…
