The sky was clear, the stars visible, but soon hidden by the clouds. Every thing was dull. The sounds of running foot steps, the brakes screeching, the vibration beneath as each vehicle passes, the faint smell of the mud and dust, the chillness in the atmosphere, the howling wind echoing in the ear, the throbbing heart, the ache on the right leg, and the pain in the arms and knees where the blood oozed out a little. The visions blurred with tears in the eyes. Derek closed his eyes. He felt too tired of everything.
"Derek, Derek," John came running towards his son screaming name and Amy behind him. She was shocked and she did not know what to do. She looked around and saw people walking towards them, to give a hand, to help. the vehicles passed by stopped, the crowd increased and someone called for an ambulance.
"What the hell were you doing? Is this how You taught a little boy to sit in the car alone playing with the door?"
"Did you not check whether the door locks or not?"
"Call an ambulance,"
"Relax, the boy is fine, see he has steady heart best, it's just the fracture and wound,"
Derek did not open his eyes but heard what everybody was saying. Some scolding, some consoling, some helping while some tried to loot.
"Help them, just contribute whatever you have and take him to hospital,"
The police arrived by then. "What happened?" they asked some people to leave and looked at the parents. The ambulance arrived at the right time. Derek was taken safely. The car was moved aside and parked in front of a building. And John and Amy got inside the ambulance along with Derek.
"Derek are you okay?" Amy asked. "Am sorry," Amy began to cry. But John did not look at her. He despised her for the words she shouted in the presence of her son.
Derek said nothing and remained still. He was embarrassed and feeling broken.
They reached the hospital and took him to the emergency section. The stretcher took him directly into the ward's bed and urged a doctor to check on him. Doctor ran to attend Derek. He took his torch and checked the eyes first. Then ran some tests. The wounds were checked and tried to move the legs.
"There injuries are minor we just have to clean the wounds and dress them, we will give medicines to heal and to prevent from getting temperature. He is alright, but there is a Tiny fracture in his left right arm, we will take the x-rays and confirm the seriousness," Doctor said and left. The nurse helped him sit on the wheel chair and took him to the x-ray room. John ran behind them. Derek had opened his eyes by then but avoided looking at people. It was really painful when the moved his hand and but tried to control his tears. He badly wished to cry out loud in a room alone. But he held it in. It was getting bad and harder.
The nurse by then changed him another room of a doctor. The same young and handsome duty doctor checked him arm. "Clean the wound," he said to the nurse. They did it accordingly and after half an hour they took to the same doctor again. John and Amy were waiting outside.
"Does it ache here?" Doctor took his hands very carefully. Derek endured it. To forget what is happening to him, he tired to think of some happy thoughts. And the happy thoughts were full of her. He slowly felt the heat leaving his body. Her smile, as she looked at him often in class, sitting next to her desk when the teacher is talking class, asking him what it is whenever he looks at her and get caught then him lying and asking for a pen. Derek smiled unknowingly but tears trickled down his cheek.
"Is there anything that's troubling you? I heard you jumped out of the car," Doctor said. "It is not a good idea isn't it?"
"The car was slow, I knew what I was doing, or else i would not have been able to stop a situation, where people were getting hurt and hurting me," he said to the doctor. The doctor was shocked and did not have anything to say back.
"Which class did you say you are in?"
"8th grade doctor. 9th soon," he said and smirked.
"Study well my boy," the doctor said patting Derek's shoulder and prepared the plaster for his arms. They put his right hand in the cast and took him out of the doctor's room in the wheel chair. John wiped his tears and looked at Derek when the nurse took him back to the bed in the ward. Other emergency cases were rushing in. The small dressing on his forehead stinked a little. Derek tried to ignore it. John was aching inside. It then dawn to Derek. He quickly searched his pocket with his left hand and found it. Nothing had happened to it. He felt relieved. He did not think about it while jumping off. Amy kept crying silently feeling guilty. But she did not say a word. She felt her body going weak but she decided to endure and not give up. Derek was not even looking at her. Amy but still did not feel that she crossed her line and said censored words in front of her son.
But to Derek knowing that his mother did not want him since the beginning hurt him. And that's when he clearly decided. "Why should I live for people who did not wish to have me in the first place, my dreams matter than your," he told himself, taught himself and decided to move with his passion. A revolutionary moment in life for Derek at an age when no child should be going through shit like him. Derek got into the cab and with parents and went back home. In complete silence. When they reached home, it was past 12AM. He took out his phone as he walked into the room shut the door. He did not let anyone enter nor speak with him. It was the saddest day in Derek's life. At that time, his phone vibrated. He looked at the screen where a favourite name flashed. He closed his eyes and cried a lot, cried his heart out until he could no longer tear up. And he composed a message.
"I thought.....
