I'm Okay, Nana

Lucy recognized the tall figure and knew immediately who it was. She chuckled inwardly again at how the man manages to keep a straight face while doing things that were way overboard.

Despite him telling her that he would talk to her in the morning. He didn't really have to come personally. He could have called. Lucy dismissed it as the man being hopelessly sincere.

Although Lucy doesn't understand the whole mechanics of Owen's mind, she acknowledges the care and truthfulness he pours when he says something.

He is someone who follows through. Someone who only says what he means, no matter how rude it may come across, with the misunderstandings usually being caused by his tone or his face.

Nana woke up with the gentle noises from the group of people entering. The young woman was already sitting upright when they arrived beside the elderly woman's bed.

They gave Lucy a courteous nod and proceeded to look at Nana who already has her eyes open, although still dazed.

"How are we feeling today, Agatha?" The man in front says in a gentle but clear voice. He adjusts his eyeglasses as he eyes the chart in his hands before looking up with a rehearsed smile. The people behind him stayed indifferent and unmoved.

"Good." Nana finally answered after a few moments. Clearly trying to be a bit more presentable to the party in front of her, Lucy could sense a polite smile budding from her grandma's lips even when she is faced away from her.

A few moments passed until Nana felt another presence in the room and turned her head towards the other side of her bed.

Nana saw Lucy, sitting on a hospital bed that was not there the night prior.

The young woman froze. She can feel Nana's gaze move from her face to the tube that is connected to her arm. Her drooping eyes carry a mix of surprise, confusion, and worry. It hurt Lucy. It hurt more than any needle can do to her skin. She didn't want Nana to see her like this.

Whatever excuse the girl brewed in her mind to placate Nana has been caught up in her throat and now the room is hanging in a tense silence. She felt her lips curl to a pout but battled to salvage it, worried that it would bring more distress to Nana's fragile heart.

Before her grandmother could speak again, another voice filled the air.

A woman's voice.

"As for Miss Bridges, we can take off your drips today, you are free to go. It's a simple case of fatigue. I will prescribe some vitamins. I also recommend adding more wholegrain food and vegetables to your diet."

At this the nurse, as if on cue, comes around and removes the tube from Lucy's arm efficiently. She keeps throwing glances at Nana while the nurse makes a partial wall between them. Lucy prudently peeks at Nana's eyes which are still occupied by anxiety, but less confusion this time.

Lucy made a mental note to thank her doctor again when she met her for the superb choice of words. Although Nana is still worried, at least she knows that the incident was just because of fatigue. No need to worry the older woman further, especially when the operation is just around the corner.

When the nurse was done, they exchanged a short smile as thanks and welcome.

She looked at Nana and smiled tentatively in an attempt to lighten up the situation. "I guess I have to eat more." her eyes begging for a reaction.

*Cough* Someone cleared his throat and Nana's attention was redirected to the person talking. Lucy was partially relieved but she knew she still had to talk to Nana more.

"The angioplasty has been scheduled for next week, Agatha. We have to monitor your body till then to make sure there will be no complications." The doctor finished his spiel with a smile and proceeded to make more detailed explanations on Nana's medications, meals, and expected progress post-operation.

Lucy stood up at this point and sat by Nana's bedside, holding her hand in hers. The old woman squeezed her hands back and nodded at the doctor making her explanations. Lucy sighed in contentment.

They listened intently as the doctor walked them through the operation protocols. The visit was finished in no time and the party started to head back to the door. The grandmother and granddaughter pair didn't bother to get up and just sat now arm in arm, most of it Lucy not wanting to let go.

"Are you okay, Nana?" Lucy placed her head on the thin shoulder beside her.

"You're one to talk." Nana shook off Lucy's head and furrowed her eyebrows facing the girl so she could see her upset face clearly. "Are you sure you're okay?" Her voice was stern but soft at the same time.

"Yes, Nana. The thing is, I forgot to get lunch and dinner yesterday and met Owen on the way here. I was all pale so he took me to see the doctor and that's how ended up there." Pointing to the other bed with her thumb. "They gave me fluids and I slept throughout the night like a baby." Her smile sat across her face like a fish.

This was the best she could come up with. She hopes Owen doesn't spoil anything when they meet. She'll make sure to tell him later.

She placed her head back on Nana's shoulder closing her eyes, this time the elder woman patted her head in acceptance. She melted, all the tension since she woke up left her body in an instant. It feels warm and nice and home. Lucy almost slept again.

The sweet moment was interrupted soon enough.

A knock on the door echoed through the room. Lucy had an expectation on who it was but left a little reservation by getting up and answering the door personally.

"Who is it?" she asks as she swings the hospital door open.
