Twisted Justice

''Compare and see what their biological parents could offer them versus what their adoptive parents could provide. Many of these children, thanks to the education from their adoptive families, have even risen to the upper echelons of society—something their original families could never have achieved.''

''Most of these children were born to single mothers who were unmarried and had no father figure in their lives. But through Ms. Margaret's benevolent actions, they gained complete families. Isn't that a good thing?''

''Therefore, I believe Ms. Margaret acted in the best interest of these children. She provided them with quality education and a better life. Even if her methods were a bit extreme, we should consider it carefully.''

At this statement, many in the courtroom were momentarily stunned, with some genuinely beginning to sympathize with Margaret's actions.

The representative for the plaintiffs was fuming. Due to the number of plaintiffs, only she was present to represent them, and since witnesses had to be impartial, the other victims who had accused Margaret couldn't attend.

This plaintiff was one of the mothers who had lost her child to Margaret. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she understood that her side was likely to be the loser in this trial. She couldn't even imagine how to face the other victims or cope with the pain of losing her child over the years. In a moment of despair, she screamed:

''Are we just supposed to lose our own children? She's a child thief, no matter how grand your descriptions may be!''

As she spoke, she tried to rush at the defense attorney, but was stopped by the staff present.

''I accuse the plaintiff of having mental health issues; perhaps it's time this trial came to a close.''

In response to the plaintiff's accusations, the defense attorney arrogantly straightened his clothes and replied nonchalantly.

Ultimately, the trial concluded with the plaintiff's accusations failing.

The defendant was found not guilty and was released on the spot.

Avery, who had witnessed this farce, left alongside his employer, who was filled with resentment. As they walked, many others followed suit. Along the way, they saw the representative of the plaintiffs join with the other accusers, crying uncontrollably, while the others expressed their indignation.

Perhaps they would appeal again.

''They actually dared to shield her so brazenly. Aren't they afraid the public will rise against them?'' Bruce said from the backseat of the car, his voice filled with anger.

Avery, sitting in the driver's seat, casually closed the car door. He seemed unfazed by the situation and responded after a moment of thought, ''As long as they can offer a plausible explanation, it's enough. The public has no right to know the real truth. Whatever they are given, that's what the public can only believe, because that's all they can know. Even if the media knows the truth, they likely won't dare to expose it, as it would offend the wrong people.''

His employer still held on to a hint of naivety, pondering what justice really was. Would a shepherd view their flock of lambs as equals?

Having once occupied the same social tier, Avery understood this all too well.

The law was merely a tool to manage the flock, while the staff in the courtroom were the shepherd dogs. So, where was there any absolute justice? In fact, these laws were crafted by humans, many of which could hardly be termed truths, as most existed merely to maintain social order.

There's no justice in this world; it's all just a means of appeasement and control by those people in power.

He stated this matter-of-factly, resulting in a long silence from his employer.

...

Whether to feel angry or to say it was expected, the Gotham newspapers have indeed changed their usual keen sense and have not sensationalized this matter at all. It seems that power truly is useful.

Aside from this, even though there are still some who know the truth and are indignant about it, along with victims continuously speaking out and protesting, due to intentional suppression, they ultimately failed to make any significant impact.

Of course, even so, the director, Margaret, can definitely no longer continue in her role, and even the orphanage named after her will face the fate of closing down due to a lack of interest; the shadow this incident leaves behind cannot be completely erased.

Among the children at the orphanage, those fortunate enough to find relatives have all been returned to their families, while the unfortunate ones who could not find their families have been transferred to other orphanages, waiting to be adopted or to grow up and enter society.

Thus, on the surface, this matter appears to be completely resolved.

However, Batman will not give up easily. Yet the investigation process has been slow due to various reasons. Perhaps in the future, Batman will be able to uncover the truth.

But that is a story for later.

For now, no matter what major events happen in Gotham, they cannot affect Bruce Wayne as he mingles at social gatherings, diligently continuing to play his brainless persona, generously donating to charity.

During these times, Avery always follows by his side, dressed in a tailcoat, tall and straight, speaking elegantly, with an inherently charming charisma that draws the attention of countless people.

Gradually, many people in Gotham came to know that Bruce Wayne had a young and handsome butler at his side, and even the tabloids in Gotham occasionally mentioned him.

However, every situation has two sides. While it's too soon to say whether a good side exists, the bad side soon revealed itself...

In the brightly lit banquet hall, on one side, there was a constant flow of elegantly dressed people, while on the other side, Avery found himself cornered in a sparsely populated area, his previously unperturbed heart beginning to feel somewhat helpless.

If this were in the past, who would dare to so brazenly approach him like this!
