Chapter two hundred and thirty-six

"Oh my God, Anna. I left a couple of days ago and you've been keeping secrets. Just how many secrets have you kept from me?" Vanessa asked in disbelief. 

"You're so dramatic, Nes."

"Answer me, Anna!" Vanessa's shrill voice echoed again and Anna had to pug her phone away from her ear. 

"You're the one who's always busy, Nes. I would have told you, but you always have one thing or the other to do anytime I call. So, it's not my fault," Anna explained like a student who was being scolded by a teacher. 

Vanessa sucked in a breath sharply and let out a whistling sound. 

"Right, work has been so demanding. I'm so sorry that I haven't been available for you, Anna. The thing is, I was promoted when I got back. I bet that you're about to say, 'Now tell me, who has been keeping secrets?'

I'm sorry for not telling you. I barely have the time to do anything because I now have a new boss, Miss Constance, and trust me when I say that she's the Devil herself. Alright, scratch that. I bet that the Devil is a man. So, I'd say that she could pass as his daughter if the Devil has children. She's such an unwarrantedly overbearing perfectionist. She makes us all work overtime, Anna. Believe me when I say that Mr Williams is such a sweet boss. If I had another job elsewhere, trust me, Anna, I would have quit." Vanessa heaved a deep sigh after she blurted out. 

Anna could hear the frustration in Vanessa's voice and she knew that she must be going through a lot in that Constance's hands. 

"Now that's some hard nut to crack."

"Oh, Anna. You have no idea and from the looks of things, this Constance is so gonna be constant. I wish I could be transferred to another department. Or maybe it would have been best if I wasn't promoted," Vanessa whined.

"How can you say that, Nes? That's what we all want right? And you've been waiting for this for a long time. I know it's hard working with her, but you can do this, Vanessa. I believe in you. I believe in your strength. We both who is the much stronger one between us. I can boast of the little strength I have because of you. Who resumed work the next week after her house caught fire?" 

"Vanessa Smith," Vanessa answered disconsolately. 

"Who succeeded in paying off her huge debts by taking multiple odd jobs each day from 8 am to 7 pm within a frame of two years?"

"Vanessa Smith."

"Who comes out even stronger no matter how many times she fails at something?" 

"Vanessa Smith." This time, Vanessa didn't answer bleakly. She sounded a little optimistic. 

"Vanessa Smith is a very strong woman. You can get through this, and you will get through it, alright, bestie?" Anna cheered her up. 

"Hey, guys! Show me your best friends. I bet that they are nothing compared to mine. I fucking have the best friend in the world and fuck you, Constance Ridge. You picked up the wrong guy to mess with." Vanessa yelled and giggled over the phone.

"Tell me that Constance isn't there."

"Relax, Anna. I'm nowhere near the company. I'm running an errand for the fucking prig." Anna shook her head at Vanessa. She learnt all the curse words she seldomly used from her. Who else would she have learnt them from?

They both chuckled and Vanessa's laughter was somewhat exaggerated. 

"So, how are you, Anna? I'm asking how you are for real, now."

"I wouldn't lie that I feel lonely sometimes. But, I think I'm doing pretty better than I thought. I have nightmares sometimes, but I'm trying to cope without him."

"I understand how you feel. I get nightmares too. I've also been trying to permanently delete the memories I had with Greg, and trust me when I say that it's easier said than done." 

"I figured that you must be going through a lot too. We are all trying to move on," said Anna emphatically. 

"You know what, Anna? I think you should get a dog." Anna sure wasn't expecting Vanessa to say that.
