Leo woke up groggily, his eyes blinking open to the sound of someone calling his name. It was Tony, the kind-hearted boss who had sponsored his job and provided him with a place to stay. Concern etched Tony's face as he watched Leo regain consciousness.
"Leo, are you alright? You collapsed in the alley last night. I've been worried sick," Tony said, his voice filled with genuine concern.
Leo rubbed his temples, feeling a dull ache in his head. "I... I don't know what happened. I got bitten by a spider, and everything went dark," he replied, confusion lacing his words.
Tony shook his head, a mix of worry and doubt evident in his expression. "Maybe you've been overworking yourself, kid. You need to take a day off, rest up," he suggested, his voice firm.
Leo protested, wanting to continue working to support Grace's education. But Tony's disapproval was unwavering, and he reluctantly accepted his boss's decision to take the day off.
As Leo drifted back to sleep, his mind haunted by a nightmarish vision of something dreadful looming on the horizon. When he woke up the next day, he felt a strange lightness in his body, as if his entire weight had been lifted.
When he caught sight of himself in the mirror, Leo's jaw dropped in amazement. His body had transformed overnight, his muscles toned and his physique more athletic than ever before. It was as if the spider bite had granted him some incredible abilities.
Filled with curiosity, Leo decided to check on Grace, only to realize that he had slept until the afternoon and she had already left for school without him noticing. Instinctively, he put on his pizzeria uniform, intending to head to work, but Tony, true to his word, had declared it Leo's day off.
With a sigh, Leo changed into his casual streetwear—a hoodie and jeans—and wandered through the streets of New York. As he explored the city, he realized just how unaware he had been of the vibrant life surrounding him, his focus solely on work and his sister's well-being.
Lost in his thoughts, Leo stumbled upon an alley where a group of thugs was attempting to rob a young boy. Fear and self-preservation urged him to turn away, but the boy's desperate plea for help tugged at Leo's conscience. Summoning a newfound courage, he shouted at the thugs, taunting them and challenging their nefarious intentions.
One of the thugs sneered, stepping forward menacingly. "You think you can interfere, punk? We'll teach you a lesson!" he spat.
Leo's heart pounded in his chest, but to his surprise, he felt an unusual dexterity within him. Though he had never been one to fight, he sensed his reflexes were sharper, his movements faster. He raised his fists, ready to face the thug head-on.
The thug laughed and threw a few air punches, attempting to intimidate Leo. But Leo remained unfazed, sensing that something was different about him now. When the thug delivered a surprise punch, Leo effortlessly dodged it, returning a powerful blow that sent the thug flying into the wall.
The other thugs, astonished by Leo's newfound strength, decided to surround him. One after another, they aimed punches at him, but with his heightened agility, Leo effortlessly evaded each attack. Counterattacking with precision, he sent the thugs hurtling into the alley walls.
With the young boy now safe, Leo approached him to ensure he was unharmed. However, a thug who had recovered from the brawl reached into his pocket and pulled out a gun, aiming it directly at Leo. Before the thug could fire, Leo's instincts kicked in. He swiftly kicked a nearby brick into the thug's hand, knocking the weapon from his grasp.
As the commotion subsided, the sound of approaching sirens caught their attention. An elderly man, presumably a resident around these blocks, stood nearby, complaining about the disturbance. Leo explained the situation to the police, but instead of being hailed as a hero, the elder insisted on putting charges on Leo for disturbance. To smoothen their cases, the police insisted that Leo accompany them to the police station for disturbance.
At the police station, Leo found himself locked up, facing the grim reality of his charges. The police offered him the choice of paying a fine or seeking parole through a familiar contact. Leo explained that he was an orphan and had no one to rely on except his sister.
The police officer sighed, stating that Leo would have to remain in jail until his sentence was served. Desperate to be released, Leo pleaded with the officers, providing testimonies of his actions being driven solely by the desire to protect a child and promising not to repeat the same mistakes.
Finally, Leo was granted permission to make a phone call. He dialed his sister's number, informing her of his predicament and how he wouldn't be able to pick her up from school that day. Grace was worried sick and immediately reached out to Tony for help.
Later that evening, Tony arrived at the police station and bailed Leo out. As they walked back to the pizzeria, Leo poured out his frustrations to Tony, expressing his disillusionment with the world and his belief that there was nothing left to live for except his sister.
Tony placed a comforting hand on Leo's shoulder, his voice filled with wisdom. "Kid, life can be tough, and sometimes it feels like the odds are stacked against us. But there's always hope, always a reason to keep fighting. You have your sister, and you have yourself. That's more than enough to make a difference in this world," he reassured him.
Leo's heart swelled with gratitude for Tony's words of encouragement. As they reached the pizzeria, Leo realized he had forgotten his phone at the police station. Knowing how important it was, he hurriedly made his way back to retrieve it.
Meanwhile, Grace had been walking home from school with Miles. They chatted and laughed, unaware of the impending danger that awaited them. Leo stumbled upon them just in time, intruding on their conversation with a mischievous jump scare.
Grace scowled, annoyed by Leo's prank, but Miles found it amusing. They continued their walk together, and Miles mentioned his desire to buy some pizza from the pizzeria for his family's dinner.
Agreeing to accompany Miles, Leo, Grace, and Miles made their way to the pizzeria, unaware of the sinister events about to unfold. As they approached the shop, flames erupted from within, and to their horror, they saw Tony battered and tied up outside. A group of masked men with guns surrounded him, interrogating him for Leo's whereabouts.
Tension hung thick in the air as Leo and his loved ones faced an uncertain and dangerous future.
