Later at night, Cassie was about to close her eyes when the phone on her bedside table rang. She reached for it and frowned when she saw an unknown caller.
"Hello?"
"Is this Mrs. Smith?"
'Mrs. Smith? Am I? I am just Theo's fake fiancé as far as I remember.'
Cassie frowned. "My apology, but who's this?"
"This is the NYPD, and we recover your husband's phone at the accident site—"
"What did you say?" Her hands started to shake as she sat up. "W-What happened?"
"Mr. Theodore Smith was rushed to the hospital because of a car accident, and before he lost consciousness, he was holding his phone and whispered the word: wife—"
"Where is he? What hospital?" she asked simultaneously as she rushed toward her closet and grabbed her leather jacket and pants.
The caller told her the address before she ended the call. Before going out, she checked for Camila first; it was a good thing the young girl was napping. It's a good thing she took a day off today.
While on her way, she couldn't think straight at the moment. Her hands were trembling as she dialed Kurt's number. In just three rings, he picked it up.
"Kurt..." her eyes widened when she felt a cold drop on her cheeks; tears flowed from them when she reached for her eyes.
"Cassie...what's wrong?"
"A-are you not with Theo? He's…"
"No. He ordered me to do some stuff. Why?"
"H-he met an accident and was rushed to the hospital. I'm on my way there. He was involved in an accident."
"What? Fuck!" she heard Kurt curse. "How did that happen? We were just fine when we parted ways."
"I-I don't know. The police called me and informed me about it."
"I'll be there. You need to calm down, Cassie," Kurt said before ending the call.
Cassie texted him the name and address of the hospital.
'Why am I crying?'
They were just okay a few days ago. They even had sex. And now, he met another accident?
She closed her eyes and wiped her tears away.
CASSIE rushed toward the hospital. She asked at the information desk about Theo but didn't use the title 'wife'.
Her tears keep pouring down her cheeks while talking in Theo's private room. As soon as she arrived, she saw the nurse who had just come out of the room and bowed her head when the nurse passed by.
Her hands were trembling while her heart thumped so fast. She twisted the doorknob and pushed the door slightly open.
As soon as she stepped in, she saw Theo lying on the white bed, unconscious. She sobbed silently as she walked toward him.
"Ms. Morgan…" one of Theo's bodyguards called her.
She smiled, but it faded away when she glanced at Theo again.
"He didn't…" she choked and covered her mouth to prevent herself from sobbing.
"He didn't wake up yet, Ms. Morgan. But the doctor said that he was already safe. He only got wounds in the head because of the impact when his car rushed towards the road barrier."
She can tell.
It has no serious damage, but the fact that he had another accident is terrifying.
Cassie sighed in relief after hearing it. She smiled and said, "Thank you," before she walked toward Theo.
She sat on the side of the bed as he reached for his hand. She pressed her lips together as she stared at his peaceful face.
"Did you two already eat?" she asked when she turned to the men in suits guarding the door.
The two nodded. But eventually, I got what she meant.
"We will stay outside, Miss," the blonde-haired guard said, making Cassie smile and nod.
"Thank you…"
"I'm Ambrose, Miss, and he's Cliff," Ambrose said as he pointed to the brown-haired man.
"Nice meeting you two. Thank you," she said and smiled.
After that, the two went out, making her shake her head as she turned to face Theo. She couldn't believe that she had only got to know those two at this moment.
"Theo…" she started. She pressed their palms together as she caressed the back of his hand. "Fear started to get back on me…" she paused when she felt a droplet on her left cheek. Which she knew came from her left eye. Then suddenly, tears pour down once again.
"Cassie."
Cassie immediately let go of Theo's hand and wiped her tears away. She smiled as soon as she turned towards the door.
"Kurt."
Kurt rushed toward them, and tints of sadness filled his eyes. "Shit! This is bad. This is the second time," he mumbled as soon as he stood beside Theo.
Cassie remains sitting beside Theo.
"What is happening, Kurt? This is just a minor accident, right? No one is behind it. I known Theo got enemies, but—"
"Shush, don't worry. We will settle this when he wakes up."
"Two days ago, he went back to Italy, then when he got back, he met with an accident. Can you please be honest with me?"
Kurt sighed. "I am not in the right position to explain everything."
"Then who? Theo? He doesn't want to talk about it—"
"Exactly. Because the more you know, the more dangerous it is."
"At least I need some information, Kurt. I don't want to be left in the dark! I want to know what to avoid! I know I am just his fake fiancé, but…I need information t-to protect my daughter."
Kurt heaved a deep sigh. "Theo is a drag racer. He is good at driving, so he opened a car company…"
Cassie frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"I talked to the doctor as soon as I got here. The doctor said that Theo is not drunk nor in the sense of drugs. Also, he said that Theo's blood pressure is low. This means to say he was stressed—"
"What are you doing here?"
Cassie and Kurt froze for a moment when they heard that familiar voice.
"What's up, man? What happened?"
Cassie slowly turned to face him and met his cold gaze. "H-Hey…"
"What are you doing here?"
Cassie was about to open her mouth when Kurt arched his brow and said, "Of course, she's paying you a visit."
"Send her away, Vega. I don't want to see her," he said.
Hearing this, Cassie's world started to melt. And it seems like a barbed wire has enveloped her heart. It aches.
She smiled faintly. "Theo…"
"Vega, I want to get proper rest. I don't want to receive any guests at the moment."
What's happening?
Kurt shook his head because of Theo's sudden demeanor. "What's wrong? She's Cassie. She's the one who called me and—"
"Vega!"
His cold gaze sent shivers down Cassie's spine. "I'm sorry—"
"Why are you apologizing? You did nothing—"
"But," she paused when his gaze pierced at her. "I'll come back tom—"
"Call the doctor, Vega. I want to get out and rest at home," he interrupted.
What is wrong with Theo?
Is this because of what they did last time? But it was clear as a crystal that they both wanted it.
Cassie was lost. She didn't do anything wrong. Why all of a sudden?
Cassie smiled at Theo before she bowed her head. "Don't worry. I won't bother you again," she said before she turned around.
She tried her best to compose herself. She glanced at Kurt one more time and smiled.
"I need to go," she said, and when Kurt nodded, she left.
Kurt could feel the tension between Theo and Cassie. At that moment, he felt anger at Theo for treating Cassie like that.
Cassie heaved a deep sigh and leaned on the door as soon as she exited the room. She closes her eyes as she clutches her chest.
"Are you okay, Ms. Morgan?"
Cassie immediately opened her eyes when she heard Ambrose's voice. She composed herself and smiled at them.
"Y-Yeah, I'm okay. It's just that your boss is a little bit grumpy," she said and let out a soft chuckle.
Ambrose smiled, but Cliff nudged his arm and hemmed to clear his throat.
"Don't worry, Ms. Morgan. Let's give him time," Cliff said, making Cassie nod.
"I know. Besides, it seems like the impact is really that bad because the cold Theo is back, am I right?"
Guess his sweetness that they have expired.
Ambrose smiled awkwardly as he didn't know what to reply.
Cliff came to the rescue. "Don't worry, Ms. Morgan. He will soon get back to himself."
Ambrose murmured something.
"What's wrong? Are you saying something, Ambrose?" she asked.
Ambrose smiled. "It's nothing, Ms. Morgan. Anyway, we're glad to escort you outside—"
Cassie raised her left hand, making Ambrose stop talking. She smiled and said, "It's fine. Thank you."
However, Ambrose still insisted.
Cassie doesn't want to fight with them, so he lets the two accompany her.
"What the hell is happening, dude? What's with the sudden act?"
Theo sighed and got up. "It's Blake."
Kurt frowned. "Don't tell me Blake threatened you?"
"He did. I have to do this. I don't want Cassie to get involved. After visiting Blake, he reminded me about Hilary…" Theo balled his fist, "he's right. If something happened to Cassie and my daughter, the blame is on me."
Kurt wiped his face using his palm. "Dude. You have your own mind. You can decide on your own. Why push Cassie away? You endured two fucking years—"
"Blake might be right. I am just confused. Hilary looks like Cassie, and maybe just because of that… I liked her."
Kurt scoffed. "Stupid you. You're being manipulated again by that monster!"
"This is for the best."
Kurt nodded. "I hope, Smith. I just hope you won't regret this."
"Blake warned me—see this? He raised his hand when an IV was inserted into it. He caused that accident."
"Huh! Now, you're afraid? Your fucking lunatic best friend is one hell of a jerk. You have a life of your own. Think well—"
"Whatever connection I have with Cassie needs to be cut. The earlier, the better. I can take responsibility for my daughter."
"Think a couple of times—"
"I already made up my decision."
Kurt clenched his jaw. "Fuck with your decisions. Get up there and fix your ass up. You also need to know something."
Theo frowned. "About what?"
"Let's meet with Hunter. I need to go and call Rona. Cassie needs comfort because an idiot made her cry."
