Wald closed his eyes, savoring the moment. But the peace was short-lived as a commotion erupted behind him. He turned to see Roran rushing towards him, face flushed and out of breath.

"My prince," Roran panted, "it's your father. The healers say... they say he doesn't have much time left."

Wald's heart sank. He'd known this moment was coming, but he'd hoped for more time. With a heavy sigh, he nodded to Roran and strode purposefully towards his father's chambers.

The room was dim and filled with the scent of medicinal herbs when Wald entered. His father lay propped up on pillows, looking frail and worn. The Supreme Lycan's eyes, once fierce and commanding, now held a softness Wald had rarely seen.
