Madison's heart pounded in her chest as she trailed closely behind Wald, her eyes darting around warily. The castle was eerily quiet, save for the occasional scuffing of their footsteps on the polished marble floors. An unsettling tension hung thick in the air, putting Madison on high alert.
She couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, that lurking eyes followed their every move from the shadowy alcoves. Paranoia crept up her spine, making the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. One wrong step, one careless misstep, and her entire subterfuge could come crashing down around her.
Wald, on the other hand, seemed unfazed by the palpable tension. His stride was confident, his bearing regal and commanding. He moved with the grace and power of a predator, radiating an aura of pure dominance. Madison found herself momentarily mesmerized, her gaze drawn to the fluid, almost feline way he carried himself.
When they reached the towering oak doors of the Strategy Hall, Wald paused, leveling Madison with a pointed stare. "Remember your place, maid. You are here at my pleasure, not your own. Speak only when spoken to, and keep your eyes downcast. Is that understood?"
Madison swallowed hard, the weight of his words settling heavily on her shoulders. "Yes, My Lord. I understand."
With a curt nod, Wald pushed open the doors and ushered her inside. Madison followed closely, her senses on high alert as she took in the cavernous room.
The Strategy Hall was a vast, circular chamber with a high, domed ceiling. Rows of heavy oak tables and chairs lined the perimeter, while a massive map of the kingdom dominated the center of the room. Candle sconces flickered along the walls, casting a warm, buttery glow that danced across the intricate tapestries and artwork adorning the space.
A hush fell over the assembled gathering of Gamma and Delta werewolves as Wald swept in, Madison trailing in his wake. All eyes turned towards them, sharp gazes scrutinizing the unexpected addition of a lowly maid. Madison fought the urge to squirm under their intense stares, keeping her gaze dutifully downcast.
Wald strode to the head of the table, his footsteps echoing in the hushed silence. "What is the meaning of this urgent summons, Lord Baros?" he demanded, his deep voice brooking no argument.
An older Gamma with graying hair and weathered features stepped forward, bowing deeply. "Forgive the interruption, Your Highness. But we have received grave news that requires your immediate attention."
Wald's brow furrowed. "Speak, then."
Baros cleared his throat, his expression grim. "It seems the Prime Minister Douglas has gone missing. One of our scouts reported seeing him fleeing the castle grounds earlier this evening."
A collective murmur of shock and alarm rippled through the room. Madison's eyes widened slightly, her heart leaping into her throat. Has her deception been uncovered? Had Douglas betrayed her, realizing she had no intention of carrying out the assassination?
Wald's jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing dangerously. "Explain."
Baros lifted a weathered hand. "It appears the Prime Minister has... turned traitor, Your Highness. Our sources have uncovered evidence that he has been conspiring with rebel factions, plotting to overthrow your reign."
Madison had to fight to keep her expression neutral, her mind racing. So, the prime ministers had been the ones behind the plot to assassinate Wald all along. And now, it seemed, Douglas had fled, perhaps fearing retaliation from the prince.
Wald's lips curled into a menacing sneer. "I knew that the snake could not be trusted. He's been eyeing my father's throne for years." He slammed a fist down onto the table, making Madison and several others flinch. "Damn him! Where is he headed?"
"We don't know for certain, Your Highness," Baros replied, his voice carefully measured. "But our scouts tracked him heading towards the border, likely fleeing to the rebel stronghold in the northern mountains."
Wald's eyes glinted with barely leashed fury. "Then what are you waiting for? Assemble a battalion and hunt him down! I want that traitor's head on a pike by sunrise!"
"At once, My Lord." Baros bowed deeply, quickly ushering the other Gamma and Delta officers out of the room to carry out Wald's orders.
Soon, the hall was nearly empty, save for Wald and Madison. The prince stood there, his chest heaving with barely contained rage. Madison dared a glance upwards, startled to see the naked fury etched across his chiseled features.
"Damn that cowardly snake," Wald growled, pacing back and forth like a caged animal. "After all I've done for him, this is how he will repay me?" He slammed a fist against the table, the wood splintering under the force of the blow.
Madison flinched, shrinking back instinctively. She knew she should remain silent, as Wald had commanded, but the words tumbled from her lips before she could stop them. "W-What will you do, My Lord?"
Wald's head snapped towards her, his eyes narrowing dangerously. "What I should have done years ago - crush that wretched rebellion before it has a chance to take root." He stalked towards her, his imposing figure looming over her petite frame. "And you, maid, will help me."
Madison felt her heart drop into the pit of her stomach. "I-I, My Lord?"
"Yes, you." Wald's lips curled into a feral grin. "You've proven yourself to be a quick learner, and I have a feeling you're far more capable than you let on." His gaze bored into hers, piercing straight through her facade. "So, you will accompany my battalion to the northern mountains. You will aid in the capture of that traitorous snake, Douglas. And you will do it without question."
Madison's mind raced, desperately searching for a way out of this impossible situation. If she refused, she risked blowing her cover and inviting the prince's wrath. But if she went with the battalion, she would be putting herself in grave danger, potentially jeopardizing her entire mission.
Still, she knew she had no choice but to comply. With a shaky breath, she bowed her head submissively. "As you wish, My Lord."
Wald's grin widened, and he reached out to tilt her chin up, forcing her to meet his intense gaze. "Good girl. I have a feeling you and I are going to make an excellent team." His thumb traced the curve of her jaw, sending a shiver down her spine. "Now, run along and prepare for the journey. We leave at first light."
Madison nodded mutely, turning on her heel and hurrying out of the Strategy Hall, her heart pounding in her ears. She had no idea what she was getting herself into, but one thing was certain - the stakes had just been raised, and her life hung in the balance.
