You Did Good, You Idiot

'You did good, you idiot,' Kane thought with a smile. 'Maybe you weren't so stupid after all.'

He looked around the apartment and steeled himself to go. This place was unfamiliar to him but not for much longer. There was one thing he needed to do before he left though. He had to tell Vera the truth about his feelings without upsetting her. Just once. 

She had taught him what love was. Helped him so much. Made him want to live instead of survive. Saved Casey. He would never stop owing her for that. She had saved both of them. 

"Hey, Vera?"

"Mm?" she asked, turning around after setting something down on the kitchen counter.

"I love you," Kane said seriously. 

Vera smiled and crossed the room to kiss him again as if this was perfectly normal. It probably was for her. "I love you too. Do you want your cupcake now or later?"

"Later's fine."
