Love Is Supposed To Be Soft

Vera sighed and sat down on the edge of his bed. She was in for a long explanation, wasn't she? 

"Love is patient. Love is kind. Love is unselfish. Love is hard. And yes, love hurts, but not in the way you're used to. It hurts when the people you love are having a hard time and there isn't anything you can do about it. Casey was right. Love is supposed to be soft."

"How can it be hard and soft at the same time?" Kane asked, squinting at her in confusion. 

"Hard as in difficult. It takes work sometimes but that doesn't mean it isn't worth it. Love is not giving up on someone even if it would be easier to." 

"Like with us." 

Vera couldn't deny this. But how was she supposed to give up on Casey when he hadn't given up on her? It was better to use a different example because she was still too emotional about this whole mess and she knew Kane didn't respond well to shows of emotion.
