Night Hunt

After some waiting Jaime peeked out her head from the tent. She was rubbing her eyes while looking at Linri sleepily.

"What?" Her voice was so low that it was as if she was mumbling instead of speaking.

"I'm hungry, give me food, quick" A stomach growl accompanied Linri's words.

"No way.. go eat your own food" Jaime's head went back inside the tent.

"I already ate all of them. Please can't you just spare some?"

"Fine, wait here"

Linri heard some rustling inside the tent. Before long Jaime handed him some rations and shooed him away. Linri went back inside his tent and ate the little rations she handed him. He was still not satisfied. His hunger was killing him. He had the desire to go back to Jaime's tent and take all her food but his reason stopped him from doing so.

The only way he could think of to satisfy his hunger was going out to hunt but it was late at night so something might attack him. His stomach growled furiously again. He could not take this hunger any more. He also had a perfect new ability for this job heat vision. He could see the heat released by animals. Wasn't this the godly sent ability for hunting. He did not really care any more. He took the hunting knife of his father. He was about to go out when he heard a voice inside his mind.

"Leave the bracelet behind"

It was Lozna. In his frantic search for food he forgot that he still did not cut the link between them so he immediately did that. He did not ignore his words though. Lozna got out of his way to remind him to leave the bracelet behind. The question was why? It was just a simple bracelet his mother gave him against the bugs. His growling stomach interrupted his train of thought. So he just threw the bracelet inside the tent. It was not that important anyway.

Linri slowly made his way into the forest. It was dark so it made the forest creepier than normal. He immediately started to search his surroundings with his heat vision. He could see the heat signatures of countless sleeping animals. Most of them were small animals so he did not even bother with them. He kept making his way inside.

After 5 minutes of slow walking he finally saw a big prey. It was sleeping on top of a branch near a tree to his right. It was something like a jaguar or a panther. Since he could only see its heat signature he did not really know what it was. He had some kind of resistance about fighting an animal this big and dangerous but he kept remembering how hungry he was.

His hunger managed to over come his sense of reason so Linri decided to take the bet. At worst he could trap the animal in an ice dome and safely escape.

He stood in a place where he could take a clear shot at the animal. He was still some distance away so he could get ready for any kind of accident. Once he started to aim he saw the animal's eyes blowing in the dark, watching him. The big cat knew he was there but he did not take any action yet. It either did not see Linri as a threat or did not want to bother with him. He hesitated again for a split second but did not change his mind.

After aiming he shoot an icicle strike with 1.5x above average speed towards the animal. In his dreams he got enough practice with it so he felt it would be okay to use. He was wrong, even though he aimed at the big cat he had missed and the icicle struck on the branch instead. From the impact the big cat fell off from its spot to the ground.

Linri heard a huge thud and some kind of screech. He did not have any time to waste so he aimed again and this time he had successfully hit its back leg. The animal instantly roared furiously towards him and ran towards the back of a tree.

He was afraid that the foul beast would try to escape after being hurt so he got up and ran after it. The big cat climbed a tree again. Linri thought it was trying to escape by taking the high ground so he tried to ran around the tree to get a better shot but he had made a mistake.

He was too close to the tree and the furious animal leaped at him. Out of reflex Linri tried to cover his face with his right arm. He also created an ice gauntlet to protect it. From the impact Linri fell backwards and the beast had slashed at his chest. It was on top of him and was furiously biting the ice gauntlet. Its teeth could not pierce it, so it was shaking its head to tear his arm off.

Linri casted another icicle strike and it pierced the animal's head. The beast collapsed on top of Linri with its heavy weight. With great difficulty he pushed it aside and got up. This was too close for his comfort zone, but he had won his first real first in this world. He was extremely happy and excited. He touched his chest and felt the blood. Right now because of adrenaline he did not feel anything aside from some tingling.

Linri tried to pull away his trophy but it was too heavy for him to carry alone. He was afraid that nocturnal beasts would soon flock here because of the sense of blood so he started to cut up the beast. He took away its legs and all the meat he can carry and left the carcass there.

Once at the camp he prepared a fire and cleaned the meat and legs. He did not do anything of the sorts before so there were a lot of wasted parts but he did not care. He hastily grilled them and started to wolf down his dinner. He had eaten all the legs and most of meat when the sense of drowsiness struck him again. He collapsed before he could make it into his tent and fell a sleep there.
