When he finally managed to get him home and began taking care of him, he heard Lathe moving around in his room and rushed in to see what he needed. When he saw him on his feet he yelled, “What the hell do you think you’re doing? You’re not supposed to be up. Get back in bed!”

“I’m leaving.”

“The hell you are!”

“Look, Anjelo, I appreciate your help, but if I stay with you, I’ll kill you. Not with a knife or a gun, but bit by bit. I can’t help it, it’s what I do. Why, I’m not sure, but believe me when I say I’ll drag you down. Just ask anyone on the street.”

“Those idiots? You can’t believe anything they say.”

“All right. Bad example. The bottom line is I like you too much to let you see my dark side. I’m just being honest here. Take it as a warning.”

“You have a dark side, huh? Ohhh, I’m scared.”

“Look, Anjelo, this is no joke.”
