We arrived back at Shirley’s place just a few minutes before the sun rose. Shirley hadn’t said a word to me on the way back and I felt the air strain with tension.
She disappeared into her room and returned wearing a sweatshirt and shorts. She put the kettle on boil and began to pace up and down the kitchen.
“Look, I knew that you and Cabot were working on something dangerous and that you two were becoming close, that much you told me from the get go,” Shirley leaned against the counter, her head hung. “But I don’t get why you never told me that your real name is Alexandrea, or that some psychopath from France has been looking for you since you were a kid…didn’t you trust me?”
“Shirley, I trust you more than anyone! You’re my best friend,” I moved to hug her but she stepped away from me.
“You trust me more than anyone, and yet for some reason Roman, a guy whom you have barely known for a few months, knows more about you than I do.”
