Jacobi turned back to look at her. "What?" he asked. Charlotte could tell from his tone that she was hurt. They had gotten into a few quarrels in the previous weeks and Charlotte was starting to get scared that she was going to lose him. Jacobi and Smile were the two people she could trust the most in the world; Jacobi even more than Smile, because she had known him for close to twenty years. Jacobi would never ever even think of doing something to hurt her. He was one of the few people who was actually concerned about her safety.

"I'm sorry," Charlotte said kneeling down. She stared at Jacobi and she saw the look of shock on his face. She had never knelt down to apologize to anyone before and she knew that he would take her apology seriously as she knelt down.
