I WILL NEVER

My name is Ade, a guy with an infectious smile and a knack for making friends, especially female ones. Despite my good-natured charm, my family often teased me for being a ladies' man, much to my mom's concern. This led to a stint in an all-boys boarding school during high school, which made me miss my female friends even more. Fast forward to my post-high school days, I decided to take the Jamb exams (A Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level) to pursue my university dreams. With the exams scheduled in Lagos, the excitement was palpable, especially because my best friend Mercy studied at the University of Lagos (Unilag). I couldn't wait to crash at her place, a comforting thought as I prepped for the big day.

Episode 6

Excitement bubbled inside me as I hastily packed my bags and headed straight back to Ibadan. The journey felt like an eternity, my mind racing with anticipation. As I arrived home, there they were—my parents and Brother John—standing outside. The seriousness etched on their faces made me realize that Brother John wasn't kidding.

With a mix of nerves and eagerness, I greeted my parents. Their response, though polite, lacked the usual warmth. I sensed a tension hanging in the air, likely stemming from my decision to claim my rightful share of the family inheritance. "Ade, go inside, drop your bags, and join us. There's something we need to discuss," my dad said with a serious tone. I rushed indoors, quickly dropped my bags, and eagerly went back out to face my parents.

The atmosphere outside was tense, not just my parents and Brother John, but also our neighbors—Bekky and her parents—were seated there. Oddly, none of them responded to my greetings. I felt a wave of unease wash over me. Why was everyone acting strangely towards me? I stood there, perplexed, while everyone seemed to carry a heavy air of concern.

Then, unexpectedly, my dad directed a pointed question at me, indicating Bekky. "Ade, do you know this girl?" he asked. Confusion clouded my mind. "Dad, she's our neighbor, we all know her," I replied, puzzled by his line of questioning. But he persisted, "How do you know her, Ade?" I repeated, "Dad, she's our neighbor," feeling a growing sense of frustration. Then came the bombshell: "Bekky is pregnant. Are you aware?" I was stunned, my hands trembling. "No, Dad, I can't be responsible for Bekky's pregnancy!" I exclaimed, shocked and alarmed by the accusation.

"Bekky's mom was livid. 'Ade, all this time you've been coming over to play with our dog, but it wasn't really the dog you came for, was it? It was Bekky?' Her disappointment cut through me like a knife. I felt small, ashamed, and utterly speechless. I wished I could vanish into thin air.Suddenly, Bekky's mom turned to me, her eyes filled with anger and hurt. 'I'm sure you're ready to become a father now,' she accused, leaving me stunned and lost for words. I never expected this bombshell. And then the realization hit me—it was all because of my brother John. I felt a surge of betrayal. How could he manipulate me like this? Why lure me here under false pretenses? I was hoping for something good, not this crushing revelation.Fuming with disbelief, I couldn't comprehend how my own brother could deceive me. Instead of being upfront, he chose to blindside me. I stood there, torn between feeling angry and hurt at his betrayal."

"Everything turned upside down in an instant. Bekky's parents arrived, carrying her bags as if it was a done deal—she was supposed to be my wife now. Tears welled up in my eyes, a mix of shock, fear, and regret flooding my senses. 'What have I done?' I whispered to myself, feeling trapped in a nightmare. My dad's words hit me like a ton of bricks, 'Ade, now you have every reason to settle down. Forget about school; you're a family man now.' His proclamation echoed in my ears, sending shivers down my spine. The dreams I once had were shattered in an instant. The house I used to find solace in became suffocating. I wished I could turn back time, erase the moment I met Bekky. I never intended for any of this—I was just seeking a moment of enjoyment, not a lifelong commitment. But now, it seemed like I'd signed my fate with a single mistake.

Pleading with my parents fell on deaf ears; they were resolute in their decision. Even my own brother, John, seemed indifferent to my plight. Night after night, I found myself sharing a room with Bekky, a situation I never imagined I'd be in."

Summoning every ounce of courage, I approached my dad, determined to make him see reason. "Dad, we're an educated family. Why are we letting Bekky's parents, who haven't even been to high school, manipulate us?" His gaze pierced through me, a mix of surprise and sternness in his eyes. "What are you suggesting?" he demanded.

Taking a deep breath, I continued, "Dad, think about it. Bekky's claimed to be pregnant, but have we even considered getting a pregnancy test? What if it's not true?" I hadn't realized my mom was awake, silently listening. Her voice startled me as she chimed in, supporting my argument. "Ade's right.

My dad's skepticism lingered in the air. "We can't just ignore this possibility. Ade, tell her to prepare. We're heading to the hospital for a test." His words carried a mix of concern and suspicion, leaving no room for doubt about his trust in me.
