Chapter 22
Once downstairs, I realized that we had only been gone for about half an hour, so everyone continued to party, oblivious to our absence.
After sitting for another ten minutes, and finally finding the restroom, I noticed Liz coming down from upstairs, wearing the same dress I had recently ripped.
There was nothing about her that gave away that she had just lost her virginity. There was still a confident smile on her face and no discomfort was evident in her gait. Liz saw me looking at her and nodded affably. It was only then that I was finally able to relax, and then I decided not to stay here any longer and went home....
I decided to walk home, so that the cool fall weather would clear my head of unnecessary thoughts.
After a couple of kilometers of the way, I realized that someone began to follow me.
- At first I didn't pay attention to the man who was following me, because my "spider" senses were silent about the danger. But when a suspicious man dressed in black follows you relentlessly, you don't want to be suspicious of him.
As I rounded the corner, I stopped and pressed myself against the wall, waiting for the man to follow me.
Soon I heard hurried footsteps, as if someone was running, and then my suspect appeared in the right place. Abruptly grabbing him from the front of his black leather jacket, I yanked him towards the wall, which caused the man, who was not expecting the attack, to faceplant into it, after which I blocked his hands behind his back.
- Tell me who you are and why you've been following me. And then give me a reason why I shouldn't break your arms and call the police? - I squeezed the man's hand until it crunched as he tried to force his way out.
- Calm down kid, I don't want to hurt you! - The man finally spoke, stopping his attempts to get free.
- I'm sure that if I had sensed any danger from you, we wouldn't be having this nice conversation. - I said with coldness in my voice. - And now I'm waiting for answers, and don't try to lie to me, I'll realize it right away... - I gave the stranger a warning and started listening to his heartbeat.
- My name is Nick Fury. I'm the director of the organization S.H.I.E.L.D
- S.H.I.E.L.D? This is the first I've heard of what you do?
- S.H.I.E.L.D is a government military organization whose primary goals are intelligence and counterterrorism. As well as countering other threats, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. Team Avengers was also created at my initiative.
- Uh, let's say I believe you. But why were you following me?
- Don't pretend you're just a regular kid Peter Parker, our organization keeps tabs on all gifted people. We started tracking you as a potential member a couple years ago, but recently we've put you under special scrutiny.
After your friend Gwen Stacy gained special powers... a couple days later, you showed up at our lab with fake IDs. Although you cleaned it up perfectly, leaving no trace of what you were doing there... normal teenagers don't hang around places like that. We soon found out that you'd gained powers like Gwen Stacy's, but much stronger. And after that, I decided to make contact with you.
- Hmm, what do you need me for? - I let go of Nick Fury and took a couple steps away.
Nick turned to face me, rubbing his aching hands, and only then did I see his face with a patch over one eye. I could tell from it that he had once held a pretty high position in the U.S. Army, but then he had resigned and disappeared, and now I could see where....
- You know, Peter, there's only a few people who know that I've got you under surveillance and that I've decided to contact you. Recently, I found traces of Hydra in our organization and started a cleanup, it's complicated and long, so you can not trust anyone there, and the world needs to save someone ...
- Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! What makes you think I'm even gonna do this? I'm not a hero, and believe me, I don't want to be one.
- I know that's not who you are, Peter. I don't need heroes, I need someone with powers, but not soft-hearted. Someone who can stop even the Avengers if need be.
- The Avengers? Are you serious? Tony Stark and his costume alone wouldn't leave me in the dust, let alone all of them. - I looked at him like he was crazy.
- Don't worry about that, our organization's not exactly a slouch either. So I'll help you with whatever you need as long as I can. Oh yeah, Tony Stark visited Gwen Stacy today, and it just so happens that he successfully recruited the girl into the Avengers..." Fury added at the end, as if unintentionally.
- WHAT!?! SHE SAID YES!? THIS BITCH... - I blurted out in shock, realizing what a dangerous venture she had gotten herself into.
I realized that most likely to agree, because now in case of what I will have to watch the girl, so that she did not have any trouble.
- Ehhh, if I agree... what will I have to do? - I sighed tiredly from this shit.
- Nothing much. You get access to technology and information and stuff. And in return, sometimes you'll have to do one or two necessary missions that our agents can't handle.
Hearing his words, I knew it was within reason. I especially liked his words about access to technology, because I don't have the right equipment or the means to make the things I need, and with their help, that problem would go away. Oh, and Gwen's protection...
- Okay, I'm in. What do you want me to do now? - I finally spoke up after thinking about it.
- While you do not need anything from you, within a couple of days you will be contacted by one of our agents, he will give you access to the secret materials, as well as technology. And in general, this person will be responsible for maintaining communication between us, because as I said in the headquarters is being purged, and almost no one can be trusted. And now I'll leave your company...
Having finished Nick Fury started to leave, but only after walking about ten steps he stopped and without turning his head said:
- Ah yes, the man on the glider is wearing a Goblin costume, his name is Norman Ozborn, from the OzCorp corporation.
- That sneaky son of a bitch told me that on purpose. He must have known I was coming to avenge Gwen's wounds. - I swore, but at the same time I was embarrassed that he'd said Harry's father's name, because he was a serious man....
I hurried home to my computer and studied it more closely. I still had to pack my things for the move....
