Secrets

“Mr. McIntyre?” She sends me a most certainly fake smile after sitting up in bed. She pushes her straight pink hair out of her face and behind her ears as I take a seat in the chair next to her bed.

“How are you feeling?” I am glad she is looking better, but I'm still concerned given how badly she looked that day. I wonder what in the world happened.

“Better now. Thank you.” I nod, unconvinced, as I notice her gaze going everywhere but me. “What happened to you, Lynda?” I pour her a cup of water when I hear her cough. “I was coming to work, and I was robbed.”

She downs the water, and I put the cup back down.

“I’m sorry that happened to you. Really.” With a clear of my throat and a deep inhale, I pull the letter out of my left pocket and hand it to her. She doesn't seem surprised or anything; in fact, her whole demeanor doesn't change as if she was expecting me to find it. But I do notice her feet suddenly rocking from side to side under the sheets.
