Chapter 5

Nate unlocked the doors, his fingers numb and stiff, and tried to help the other four climb in. Merl ended up doing most of the boosting and pushing. Nate scrambled back behind the wheel and turned the key, muttering a prayer under his breath. The engine sputtered once and then caught. Thank all the gods.

He knew there was no way he could have gotten the three weaker refugees back to his place on foot, even with Merl’s help, and they would have had to leave all their stuff in the vehicle. After the heater began to put out a faint breath of warmth, he poured everyone a cup of hot liquid. Once he left the car he’d realized it was foolish to carry the jugs. He couldn’t have poured the drinks and they’d have frozen almost at once anyway. But now it worked.
