Chapter 13

David watched them get into Jason’s rental.

“You did get a booster seat for him at the rental car company?”

“Of course, I did, I followed your instructions. You remember we used to be a good team at one time?”

David moved closer to help, but Jason waved him off. “I can do it.”

Once Quinn was buckled in, Jason closed the car door. “Yeah, we used to be a great team once. You reading scripts, telling me which ones were better.” Jason choked on his words, then cleared his throat. “I’ll take good care of him. I promise.”

“You better,” David said sternly.

David waved goodbye, and Quinn waved back. David crossed his arms against the weird chill and emptiness he felt as the car took off. He didn’t stop the tears that slowly fell.

Once they turned the corner, and the car was out of sight, David walked inside the home, and closed the door. His back against the door, he was overwhelmed with the silence in the house. He slid on the floor and sobbed, his head buried in his hands.
