Find a job

Michaël and I were walking down the street when he had fired his driver wanting to enjoy my company even longer. It was the end of class and after working on the exercises in today's class we were out two hours after the end of class with my heart pounding at the fact that my sister must be worried.

"That's what I've been telling you from the start, you really should have a cell phone but you refuse to let me offer you one"

I shake my head in denial, no I don't want my friend to give me a cell phone and I don't want my sister to go into more debt to give me one either.

"It would be easier and simpler you know… to contact you"

I turn to Michaël and he looks away while his ears are red – what are these rather bizarre reactions with him. The last time I asked him if he had a fever and he said no but he's been really red for a while and finally I concluded that he doesn't like sun maybe according to his organism it is too hot.

I shrug my shoulders before blowing with my lips, the noise is quite pronounced because Michael turns to me and asks me if I'm tired.

I pick up my notepad and write.

"No I thought you were right I need a cell phone but I don't want you to give me one and I don't want my sister to either." … But why Emma? »

I pick up the paper and write again.

"I would like to offer it to myself but I don't have a job, how can I earn money to buy it in this case? »

He scratches his head and turns around looking for something. In the end he takes my hand and leads me through the streets of the city.

"I understand that there are jobs that are not made for you but I'm sure that if you look carefully you will find them"

I smile and let myself be guided by Michaël, I don't want to argue with him, especially when he is looking for a way in his life to escape and breathe a little from the too great responsibilities that weigh on his frail shoulders - at least not in the literally. Because frail, no, Michaël's shoulders are far from being frail, just like the boy in question. Being a model Michaël is naturally well endowed whether it is his face or his physique, so compared to him I am rather small and fragile.

He turns to look at me and decides to go buy a newspaper. He comes back a few minutes later and hands me the paper

"We'll probably find an ad in the newspaper and I'm sure we'll find your happiness among them"

I nod and we go to sit in a nearby cafe going through all the ads we find. But no matter how hard we search we can't find any listings where I could qualify. I rest my head on the table as a sign of abandonment when I really feel like a loser. I raise my head to Michaël who seems to be continuing to search and I wonder why he is so aggressive when it is a waste of time. No matter how much we searched even if there are plenty of ads, the jobs where I could work are unfindable and there is no point in looking because even if he finds one, he is not sure that the employer wants me to work for him.

"I don't really like your defeatist face... And so even if we haven't found it yet, it's not the time to get discouraged. Anyway, we'll see about that tomorrow, I wouldn't want to give your sister gray hair, so we'll continue tomorrow. »

I sit up slightly as I would have liked to have had his enthusiasm but especially his optimism but I live my reality. He can't understand me it's hard to feel like you're worthless and good for nothing. No he can't so he can be that optimistic I'm going to do my best so he doesn't think I'm spitting on his efforts.

I smile and nod before getting up and following him as I accept his lead to my neighborhood, at least to his entrance. I make sure he is already in his car behind a bush and when the car is far away I come out of my hiding place. Indeed, so worried by the fact that he is in this infamous place, I preferred to pretend to have left before waiting to see if he was the one who left.

I arrive home with the sky over my head turning dark as I find my sister sitting on the doormat. She's obviously waiting for me and when she notices my feet she straightens up and hugs me.

"Where have you been, I got sore"

** I had to revise on a project with a friend and we just got home like this **

"I see then there is nothing wrong… by the way you seem happier since you are in this high school. »

** It is the case I have never been so happy to go to school **

We go home and the next evening I am in the streets of the city looking for a job accompanied by Michaël. For almost a week we search and finally we see a sign in front of a small shop that looks like an antique dealer.

"Hello sir I am Michaël and she is Emma and we are very interested in the work you are offering"

"Good evening young people...yes it's true I'm looking for someone who will help me put the books away after the customers have passed by, can you see behind this curtain there is a private lounge for all book lovers and I would need someone who will put the books away after the clients… my old bones aren't strong enough to do that anymore… so who wants the job I can only hire one of you. »

"Oh yes we know it's Emma who wants the job".

"Ah Emma so nice to meet you"

He holds out his hand to me and probably waits for me to answer but I remain silent the hour of truth has come.

"Hmm sir Emma is mute, she can't speak"
