Chapter One

There was a gloomy feeling in the air as Josh entered the room, inside the room was a single chair with a girl strapped to it, electrodes attached to her head and her legs which would administer volts with just the flip of a switch. Josh approached the lever, a look of guilt and despair on his face as wrapped his hand around it and looked back at the girl one final time, he could feel tears rolling from his eyes and his muscles seemed to tighten as he pulled the lever, closing his eyes as her scream echoed throughout the room.

Josh suddenly awoke with a panic, his heart beating rapidly. He looked over at his clock, 6 AM. Josh slowly sat up on his bed scratching his now ashen white hair, he rubbed his old tired eyes and got out of his empty bed, groaning as he slowly stumbled into the bathroom.

About an hour later, Josh slowly walked out of his bathroom and down to the living room, sitting on his couch and wincing as his bones cracked. He sat back and yawned silently, staring blankly at the wall. He looked up at a certificate on his wall next to a badge, reminiscing about the old days, until he heard a knock on the door, "The door's unlocked!!!" Josh yelled in a grouchy voice. A young girl wearing a bright blue shirt opened the door, she was carrying a small duffel bag, "Good Morning Sir!! I was wondering if you'd like to sign a petition abolish the death penalty in this state?" The girl asked, she appeared to be around 16 years old, she had light brown hair and blue eyes. "Aren't you a little too young to be worrying about such complex topics?" Josh mumbled, "...Perhaps, but I believe everyone deserves a second chance, we're all human after all" she shrugged.

Josh remained silent as he stared at the floor, memories flooding through his head. "Y'know, you kinda remind me of a girl I knew a couple of years ago..." Josh said with a frown, "Really?" The girl tilted her head curiously, "What was she like?" The girl asked. Josh had a rather shocked expression at first, but it slowly grew into a kind smile, "...Come sit with me, and make sure to close the door behind you..." Josh invited, the girl reluctantly closed the door and approached the couch, which was slowly losing its yellow-tinted color. "...This happened decades ago...I was a little older than you...and I had just gotten a new job at a nearby Max Security prison..."
