The Climax Of Tension

Once we were down the stairs and far enough away that we weren't concerned about being heard, I let out a noise of pure stress. So, to recap, the guy who was a few floors above us was definitely an entity with a level akin to God. He wasn't the one we thought he was, and it would seem, as long as he was the only god attacking this area, that he had not only summoned that angel, but also wasn't being forthright about what he had done to supposedly clean the place up. Whatever else he had up his sleeve, I or Mika had no way of knowing. I mean, Mika should have known for all intents and purposes, but she made one thing very clear once she again opened her mouth.

"I couldn't read his mind."

So, whatever he decides to do, we'll be completely out of the loop. Pretty damn inconvenient, especially since from now on, he'll definitely be keeping his eye on us. No, no, he's definitely going to kill us. I held in the rising vomit in my throat. What the hell was he gonna do to us? I looked over at Mika, who still seemed to be processing. When our eyes met, she sighed, and took my hand, leading me back to my class without another word. The lunch period had come to an end without my noticing. I almost felt like an idiot. As we arrived at the door, I felt her spin me around and look me deep in the eyes.

"We're gonna be okay, got it? I need you to be on your guard, and he may send something after you, but I promise, I won't let anything happen to you. We work together, we put an end to this. Got it? Finish classes and meet me right here." She pointed at the ground we were currently standing on. Her unwavering gaze set my heart at ease. I gave her a nod before turning to my classroom and placing my hand on the knob. Something was stuck in my throat though. Something that really had to come out. I turned my head just a bit to flash her the warmest smile I could muster.

"Okay. I trust you."

I did my best to let my mind focus on the crap on the whiteboard. While vigilance was my current most important objective, I also knew my paranoia would do its best in getting the best of me, so any distraction to offset some of that is pretty much necessary. The only issue with that was the man teaching the class. My discussion with my professor played over and over in my head. His air made my skin crawl still. Worse yet, whenever I looked away, I could feel him staring at me, his gaze feeling like it could tear through my flesh if it wanted to. I did my best to keep staring forward since that was the case.

The phrase on the board was starting to unsettle me, though. 'Those in hell whimper, those in heaven scream.' I tried to recall what book we were talking about, but I came to the realization that…he…he never said. My eyes moved to the one he was holding open in his hand. There was no info on it. It was just a black book. I looked around the class, but either no one else had noticed, or they were too scared to question it. I looked back at the quote. Was it a message then? But what the hell was it supposed to mean?

"In short!" The professor slammed the board with his eraser. Everyone sat up tall. His eyes were locked on me, and a small grin was on his face. "The greatest place of misery exists for those who are too innocent to even feel the confidence to scream, and heaven exists for those violent enough to kill all those who stand in their way of it. Does anyone know the name for this?" The professor placed his marker on his lips. The whole class seemed to finally catch on to how sketchy this was, giving each other confused stares. I grit my teeth, before slowly raising my hand.

"Do you know it, Marcus?" He asked.

"Uhm…I think…I understand the sentiment behind it. I don't think I know the name though." I felt my breathing starting to grow erratic.

"Oh? Well, tell me, what's the meaning then?" He cocked his head. His eyes. His fucking eyes. Stop looking at me. Stop it!

"Good people suffer so that the awful can achieve their dreams." I gave my answer with a bit of hesitance. I waited, watched, as he straightened out, seemingly chewing on my words. Finally, he smiled.

"That's right Marcus. Good people suffer so bad people can succeed. Can you tell me what exactly that sounds like?" He asked.

Before I could answer, one of my classmates stood up. Everyone looked with astonishment as something that had never happened before suddenly occurred as if it were commonplace.

"It sounds like bullshit professor."

And suddenly, without any warning, I felt the flooring next to my desk fly up, aiming for my chin. It halted just inches away. Shit…shit!

"How crude of a student you are. I don't believe I recognize you…well, not in class, anyways." My professor chuckled, before snapping his fingers. The flooring came flying at the student, who made a circle with his fingers. I ducked in anticipation, but was instead met with the sound of repetitive, wet crushing. I peeked up my head to see all my classmates dead, their blood floating above their body before rushing toward my professor. "That's enough of that." My professor ducked, dodging the assault, before jumping up onto his desk. In a flash, that professor and classmate were gone, along with a bang and one of the walls.

"J-jesus…"
