The twilight sky cast a soft golden hue over Liyue Harbor as Aether and his companions moved through the bustling streets. Despite the peaceful scene, the weight of their mission pressed on Aether's mind. The Abyss Order's plan was becoming clearer, but so were the intricacies of Liyue's power dynamics. Between the Qixing, the Adepti, and now the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, the city's balance seemed delicate—any misstep could spell disaster.
Amber had been unusually quiet after their debrief, her usual boundless energy tempered by the gravity of their situation. "So what's next?" she asked as they walked. "We know what the Abyss Order is after, but how do we stop them? Liyue is massive—there's so much ground to cover."
Lisa chimed in with a thoughtful nod. "The Qixing are powerful, but they don't always act in the interest of the Adepti or the spiritual balance. They're practical, driven by contracts and wealth. If we're going to approach them, we'll need to present a strong case."
Aether understood that coordinating with the Qixing wouldn't be simple. Their interests were rooted in economics and trade, and while they wielded great power in Liyue, they weren't known for easily trusting outsiders. Nevertheless, it was a necessary step.
Rosaria, her usual sharpness evident, added, "We should move carefully. The Qixing are calculated. If we don't have something to offer, they won't take us seriously."
Aether glanced at the towering stone structures of Liyue, feeling the weight of the city's history and the challenge ahead. "Let's start by speaking with someone who knows the Qixing. Maybe Zhongli can help us make an introduction."
They found Zhongli near the Yuehai Pavilion, a grand building that housed many of Liyue's administrative offices. He was in his usual place by the stone pillars, observing the harbor below with his characteristic calm. As they approached, Zhongli greeted them with a nod.
"Ah, you've returned," Zhongli said, his voice as composed as ever. "I take it you've learned more about the inner workings of Liyue?"
Aether explained what they had learned at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor and their need to connect with the Qixing. Zhongli listened carefully, his golden eyes narrowing slightly as he considered their next move.
"The Qixing are not easily persuaded," Zhongli said, his tone thoughtful. "They value contracts, precision, and results. However, if you approach them with a clear plan and demonstrate your usefulness, they will listen. Ningguang, the Tianquan of the Qixing, is someone you should meet. She oversees the trade and wealth of Liyue and holds considerable influence."
Lisa's gaze sharpened. "What would it take to get an audience with her?"
Zhongli smiled faintly, his expression knowing. "Ningguang does not see just anyone. However, if you prove yourselves capable and show that you can help safeguard Liyue's interests, she will undoubtedly take notice. There are many threats to Liyue, both within and without. If you can resolve some of those, it will earn you favor."
Aether understood the message clearly—if they wanted the Qixing's help, they would need to prove themselves by solving some of Liyue's immediate problems. It wasn't just about fighting off the Abyss Order. It was about protecting Liyue's economic interests and showing that they could contribute to the city's stability.
Amber, who had been quietly listening, brightened at the prospect of action. "So, we help Liyue out with a few problems, and then we get to meet Ningguang? Sounds like a plan!"
Lisa smiled, her tone teasing. "Oh, Amber, always ready for the next adventure. But yes, that seems to be the way forward."
Zhongli gestured toward the distant peaks of Liyue's mountains. "There have been reports of increased Treasure Hoarder activity near Qingce Village. They are disrupting trade routes and endangering travelers. If you deal with this threat, it will certainly catch the Qixing's attention."
Rosaria, ever direct, added, "Treasure Hoarders? That sounds easy enough."
Aether nodded, feeling the plan start to take shape. "We'll take care of it. Once we've earned the Qixing's trust, we can focus on stopping the Abyss Order's plans."
The group set out the next morning, heading toward the rugged hills that surrounded Qingce Village. The village itself was nestled in a valley, surrounded by lush green fields and terraces that stretched up the mountainsides. But as they approached, the peaceful landscape was marred by the sight of overturned carts and frightened villagers, clearly distressed by the recent attacks.
Amber approached a group of villagers who were gathered near a damaged cart. "Hey there! We heard about some trouble with Treasure Hoarders in the area. We're here to help."
One of the villagers, an older man with worry etched into his features, nodded gratefully. "They've been attacking caravans for days now. The trade routes are too dangerous, and the village is suffering. If you can drive them off, we'd be in your debt."
Lisa reassured the villagers. "We'll deal with the threat. Stay safe and keep watch for any more disturbances."
The group made their way up the narrow path toward the cliffs where the Treasure Hoarders had been spotted. As they climbed higher, the air grew cooler, and the landscape became more treacherous. Amber, always scouting ahead, spotted the first sign of their enemies—small camps set up among the rocks, with Treasure Hoarders patrolling the area.
"There they are," Amber whispered, crouching low behind a boulder. "Looks like they've set up shop here."
Aether surveyed the camp, counting at least a dozen Treasure Hoarders, all armed and clearly confident in their position. "We'll need to hit them fast and hard. We can't give them time to regroup."
Lisa nodded in agreement. "Amber, Rosaria, you take the flank. Aether and I will go in from the front. We'll hit them from both sides."
The group moved swiftly, coordinating their attack with precision. Amber's arrows flew true, striking the first group of Treasure Hoarders before they even realized what was happening. Rosaria followed in the shadows, her spear taking out any who tried to flee.
Aether charged into the center of the camp, his sword glowing with elemental energy. He unleashed a gust of Anemo wind, knocking several enemies off balance. Lisa was right beside him, her Electro attacks crackling through the air, stunning their enemies and leaving them vulnerable.
The Treasure Hoarders were no match for their combined strength. Within minutes, the camp was cleared, and the trade route was safe once again.
"That was easier than I expected," Amber said with a grin, wiping sweat from her brow.
Lisa stretched lazily, her eyes gleaming with amusement. "It's a start. We'll need to report this to the Qixing and see if it earns us the audience we need."
Rosaria, ever practical, added, "Let's not waste time. We should head back and see what comes next."
As they made their way back to Liyue Harbor, Aether felt a sense of accomplishment but knew the real challenge still lay ahead. Convincing the Qixing to take the Abyss Order's threat seriously would be no small task, but they were one step closer to their goal.
And as they approached the towering stone gates of the city, Aether couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched—that the true power in Liyue was just beginning to take notice of their presence.
In this chapter, the group begins earning the trust of the Qixing by dealing with threats to Liyue’s trade routes. The tension is building as they prepare for their first interaction with Ningguang, the Tianquan. More intrigue, action, and character development await in the chapters to come!
