Chapter 7 - Enchantments

I was sitting down with the other students, listening to the teacher explain gravity magic. This is pointless. The only reason I'm still going here is because of my parents. Finally, the lesson ended, and we were able to leave. As I made my way back to my room, a voice called out from behind, interrupting my thoughts.

"Hey you!"

I turned around, a blue-haired girl standing behind me. She looks kind of familiar, but I can't quite hit the spot.

"....Who are you again?"

The blue-haired girl was stunned and had a face of disbelief when I said that.

"How could- we fought in the entrance exam! How did you forget that!?"

"Oh, right. You're Rosalind Arthur. What do you want?"

"Teach me." She responded quickly.

"What?"

"Teach me how to do those things you did at the entrance exam."

I frowned.

"I don't have any plans in taking disciples. Can't you find someone else?"

Rosalind shook her head, I could see the determination in her eyes. She was persistent in getting me to teach her.

"No. I have never encountered anyone with such a profound understanding of magic. You're the ideal person to teach me." She insisted.

I couldn't help but sigh, feeling a mix of flattery and annoyance. I scratched the back of my head, I really only wanted to focus on learning new magic, but in the end, I nodded, agreeing to teach her.

"I don't really have a choice, do I? You're going to keep bothering me otherwise. Alright, fine."

"Then, I will expect you to see me at my room later."

Before I could respond, she walked away. What an idiot. She didn't tell me her room number. Well, anyway, I'm just going to hang out in the library and read up on some books until then.

I set my course towards the library. The library's towering shelves and the faint smell of ancient parchment welcomed me as I entered, still as beautiful when I first saw it. As I looked around for a suitable book I could learn, my eyes fell on Ronan, who was sitting down and reading a book.

"Ronan?" I walked up to him.

He looked up at me, slightly surprised to see me.

"Oh, hey! It's nice to see you again, Rei!"

"It's nice to see you too. What are you reading there?"

"I'm trying to learn flame magic, but I can't grasp it." He explained.

"Show it to me, and I'll try to help."

Ronan nodded before taking a deep breath and closing his eyes, trying to access flame magic. I observed, crossing my arms.

[Clairvoyance]

Instantly, I picked up an error in his spell.

"I found it. Here's what you're doing wrong."

I opened, igniting a flame that hovered a few inches above it.

"Flame magic is not like fire magic. The difference is that flames do not have a defined shape. So, instead of concentrating it, you let it flow freely."

"Oh! That makes sense!" He looked in awe and intrigue.

"Also, flame magic is much more powerful than fire magic. This is why in the entrance exam, I used gravity magic to manipulate the flame magic instead of using fire magic to manipulate it normally."

Ronan looked up at me with gratitude.

"Thanks!"

"It's no problem. Anyways, see ya."

I walked past him, my curiosity leading me to a different section of the library. As I examined the shelves, my eyes fell upon a particular book that seemed to call out to me. The title "Basics of Enchantments" caught my attention, and I reached out to grab it, intrigued. I flipped through the pages quickly before closing it and looking at the other books. Alright, I guess I'll take a look at this.

I grabbed a couple of more books from the shelf before leaving the library, heading back to my room. Once I made it back to my room, I placed the books on my desk. The clay doll I made didn't fall like last time. Was it really an accident?

"Whatever. I'm just going to get to work with these books."

And so, I began learning enchantments. Enchantments were more than just casting magic onto an item. It used scriptures¹, which are basically spells in word form. Though, as simple as that sounds, it wasn't actually that easy. You can't really use "Sharpness" on its own like actual magic, now could you? Also, adding too many enchantments can cause the items to break instead. So far, the highest I have been able to get on a wooden sword are five enchantments. Those being: Sharpness, Strengthing, Swiftness, Piercing, and Resilience.

After dedicating the entire day to learning enchantments, the moment of truth had finally arrived. It was now the time to put them to the test. I picked up my wooden sword and sneaked out at night.

[Invisibility]

I walked into the nearby forest and was able to stumble upon a boulder. This was perfect to test the enchantments. With a proper stance, I raised my sword high, channeling my focus and strength. I swung the sword with all my might, it cleanly cut through the boulder as if it were butter.

"Interesting...I don't think the enchantments are supposed to be this strong. Maybe it depends on who enchanted it?"

As happy as I am right now, I can't help but feel like I'm forgetting something. What did I have to do again? Hm....

Then it hit me.

"Oh shit. I forgot to go see Rosalind!"

1. Scriptures are, as simply as I can put this, words with magical effects that change items or the environment.
